European leaders have pushed back at Donald Trump’s ultimatum that they increase defence spending or risk America scaling back its commitment to Transatlantic protection. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said her country would not accelerate existing, long-term plans to ramp up the military budget by 2024 despite a demand by the US this week that countries increase spending by the end of the year. The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, also said countries must not cave in to US demands. James Mattis, US defence secretary, earlier this week warned Nato that a new “political reality” after the election of Donald Trump meant it was no longer possible for allies to shirk their share of the defence burden.

When Merkel loses her election, the winner will hopefully want to pay Germany’s fair share.

Merkel needs to be removed from office ASAP or a lot of people are going to die. This woman is completely and utterly out of her freakin’ mind saying the other day ‘Islam is not the source of terrorism’ and it is ‘the duty of Germany to take in as many refugees as possible’. Yeah, so she’s going to take in as many as possible but of course SHE is in no danger from that. But meanwhile the average German or European is going to be raped or beheaded. Anyone remember last year someone from the United Nations - of all things - stated that anywhere from 10 to 30% of these refugees are radicalized? 30%!!!! Think how huge that number is! If Merkel imports 3 million, that’s a potential 900,000 Allah Akbars ready to gut Germany, an entire freakin’ army of them. Germany is committing suicide by allowing this nut to remain in office.

Well, that makes it easy. Good luck defending yourself without U.S. Taxpayer subsidies.

Well, then let them carry the burden of their defense on their own. Good luck.

Germany has 350 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs).

About what ONE panzer division had in WWII.

The Pennsylvania National Guard has more MBTs.

Trump is right. If Europe doesn’t want to pay for their own defense - why should America?

Translation: We haven't honored our commitment so far and we're certainly not going to start now!

So Europe does not want to support NATO by paying there fair share? Is that the message here?

Like some of the sanctuary cities, the Euros don’t fully understand the situation.
Uncle Sugar is driving. They don’t have a choice.

No, NATO-loving McCain will make up the difference with the profits from his wife’s beer business. Then the tribute to senatorial senility can go back to trashing Trump while groveling on the European royal carpets, along with best pal Lindsay Graham.

Trump, just in case you’re wondering I’m ok with you pulling the trigger on scrapping NATO if they refuse to carry their weight. They always want international agreements but they don’t live up to them...Then what’s the point?

The Texas National Guard would whoop the German Army’s ass in about 2 days. They wouldn’t even be a seped bump to the Russians.

The size of the German army at the moment is 60,101, or roughly 60% of what the Treaty of Versailles restricted it to. That was considered a punishment. It isn't, of course, merely a measure of manpower that is in question here, but still, that's not much of a commitment.

The bottom line is that all signatories to NATO have an agreement as to military spending as a percentage of GDP and members who have reneged should live up to their commitments. That isn't exactly a clarion call to war, it's a perfectly reasonable foundation of collective security. If the Germans or anyone else wants to change that, fine, let's renegotiate. That is, after all, what Trump is calling for, isn't it?
