Where in New Mexico? There are certain areas of that state that are lined with dopers, dealers and welfare families. Maybe it’s changed over the last 20 years.

Yes, it's gotten worse. ABQ is one of the most violent cities with random carjackings and other crime by the dopers looking for easy cash. The justice system sucks with the criminals getting out of jail on bond before the police complete reports and cases referred to the DA get dismissed because information for prosecution is not available within the statutory deadline. In many if not most cases when the criminals are caught they are known to the police as they are repeat offenders. One word of advice to visitors staying in area motels - take EVERYTHING out of your car and if you have a truck or trailer with your belongings, chain or have a kill switch otherwise it will be gone by morning.
