America Is Safer, in Less Than a Month

Consider this: What can we predict about the immediate political fallout if a substantial jihadist attack on American soil were to happen tomorrow?

Answer: As we saw following 9/11, the visceral response is to rally around the flag; to see clearly the truth that despite our diverse spectrum of interests and opinions, there is much more connecting us than separating us. But the partisanship of the moment would profoundly affect the internal contours of that response.

For starters, the response of President Donald Trump would mostly likely be predictable, somewhat juvenile, and entirely correct: “I told you so.” It is not hard to imagine a tweet consisting of precisely these words, despite their impropriety.

Such a response, would present all those vigorously resisting his leadership -- which is to say nearly all Democrats and some Republicans -- with a stark and unavoidable choice: double down or shut up. The atmosphere and national mood would encourage the latter; some converts might have a genuine change of heart, and others merely a keen sense of self-preservation.

The point of this thought experiment is to illustrate what Trump has already accomplished: he has, to no small degree, hamstrung our enemies. A large-scale tactical success for them would risk strategic disaster. Trump campaigned on the strategic advantage of unpredictability. The popular response to a large attack would, simply put, elevate him. That is a thing that the jihadists devoutly want him not to have, for reasons that should be obvious.

This is true because of the asymmetric nature of our conflict. We are the conventional power, clearly superior in resources and technology. They are the guerrilla force, relying on concealment, surprise, and a low-intensity conflict to neutralize those advantages....

There are times when it’s great for everyone to think you’re a loose canon mad man. Who knew?

The terrorists realize there isn’t a single taboo that will stop Trump from ramming a cruise missile up their keester if the situation calls for it.

Those that plan on carrying out an operation on this guy’s watch better darn well mean it when they say they want to die for Allah.

Between you and I, I’d recommend to Trump the cruise missiles with a side of bacon.

It is not my fault that GW and BHO were weak and corrupt. IMO, we should have firebombed every one of the “holiest sites of Islam” beginning at #10 on 9/12, ending at Mecca during the “Grand Haj”. If they choose to believe their allah is superior, let him stay the hand of our wrath. Of course now in the light of day when we realize the entire exercise was about finding a new enemy to war with, I am glad we didn’t do as I would have done.

About our prosecution of the war, we pitty pat around and pretend to be at war, when all it is really about is making multi-nationals more billions. We don’t want to solve the problems, the PTB LOVE the problems. You see they are never in danger from anything, except if a country nationalizes its natural resources, or refuses to pay its debts like Iceland (God bless them).

The lines “it is a dangerous world” or “America is always under attack” ring empty to me, but it is force fed to us every time one enemy is “defeated”. This game of “whack a mole” tires me. If we are at war, and we want to destroy the threat, let us just do it. Oh, and let us do it in a few months or a couple of years. Not 16 years and running.

My brother told me 50 years ago, if you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly. ;)

And, yes, I am confident President Trump read the Art of War.

I wouldn’t doubt it. I’m sure there are corollaries between war and top level business manipulations.

on the local scene concealed carry classes are full every weekend. Been like that for a while. No body knows who is a papa or mama grizzly and some might even have a Grizzly in their pocket as a backup.

I've occasionally had that thought, that if you turned their holy sites into a nuclear "No Go" zone, the religion might wither on the vine, since it would suddenly become blindingly obvious (one would hope) that Allah couldn't protect those sites, or his followers.

Of course, there are so many predictable, and unpredictable, consequences from that action that it wouldn't be worth it, but still, it's a fun fantasy.
