Could Trump take us back to the moon?
NBC news ^ | 17 Feb2017 | Alyssa Newcomb

President Trump has said he wants to "unlock the mysteries of space" and "focus on stretching the envelope of space exploration."

He may now have the chance to send astronauts to orbit the moon, a mission that carries significant risk — but which, if executed smoothly, could bring huge benefits to accelerating future missions to deep space...

There are reasons why we never went back.

Just imagine what it means if the US were to become an energy supplier to the world. We would OWN the world and rule it. I don’t think that nothing is more important than for us to become energy independent. We would truly be top dog and the muslim world would be on the decline. Islam spread because of the oil money — we could put a stop to that once and for all. The world will know a Pax Americana.

"I don’t think that the crew from the first landing even made back before the poverty pimps were complaining that the money should have gone down their rat-hole rather than being ‘wasted’ on space exploration."

We should have a launch pad on the moon by now.

Moon base is the ONLY intelligent goal, so Trump may go for it.

America—in the Age of Trump—is great enough to rebuild the infrastructure, Rebuild our Army, Air force, and Navy, Return to Law and Order—as well as establish Moon Base Trump One.

In a word, yes.

I believe by the end of Trump’s first term our space program will be VERY active again.

Imagine if they built a Space Telescope on the Moon.

No size restrictions on the Mirror like the Hubble and the new James Webb Telescope that will be launched in 2018. It would allow us to see further into the Universe than ever before with no Atmospheric distortion.

Mining for Helium 3 and Rare Earth Elements is also a possibility.

Heck, construct a Rail Gun to launch Payloads into deep space. I know, having an Imagination is easy. LOL

The last three Apollo missions -- Apollo 18, 19 and 20 -- were canceled. NASA figured out pretty quickly that the benefits of these missions never justified their enormous cost.

At this point, manned space exploration has pretty much been relegated to people and/or countries that feel like they have something to prove -- and that's it.

I sure hope so.

When you first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey you must have thought that Pan Am actually would be flying passengers up to a space station like that.

One of my great disappointments (besides the demise of Pan Am) is that our space program dwindled off into the realm of the boring if not non-existant. Hell, we even have to rely on the Russians for our boosters.

I find post-1990 developments in the space program fascinating.

What we're seeing now is a U.S.-Russian space program that takes advantage of the best assets that each country developed over the years. The U.S. had superior technology, while the Soviets had superior personnel for space travel. Interestingly, it looks like the Soviets were smart enough to figure out that a shuttle-type orbiter was not a very efficient vehicle at all ... so they never stopped using basic rockets to launch payloads and crews into space.

I did not mention the poster in question, so I felt no compunction about not pinging him.

I’ve really had enough pseudo-science for one day.

Gotta replace ISS with a 2001 Space Wheel if we are ever going to find the Black Obelisk...

The only reason we should bother with another moon landing is to establish a base to get to Mars. But in all reality, there is no real reason to go back to the moon. There are no fuel sources, no food sources, minimal water sources. It just doesn’t make sense. Then again I’m an engineer and don’t get too excited about extraordinary things. Mars would be great. Why? Just to say we can.
