hile President Trump wavered Thursday on whether he will stop shielding from deportation people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children, his aides have identified at least two ways to quietly end their protections without his fingerprints.
An executive order has already been drafted to end the program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, that allows hundreds of thousands of the immigrants to live and work openly in the U.S. Trump used that legal mechanism to great fanfare to expand deportation authority and restrict entry to the U.S.
But with the president showing less willingness to sign such an order, advisors have begun to explore alternatives. Their hunt suggests that the White House is hesitant to publicly target a well-organized group of immigrants who have prominent public backing, including from President Obama, and to whom Trump has shown sympathy.

DACA is a very, very difficult subject for me, Trump conceded during a rambling East Room news conference Thursday, promising to address the issue with heart. Its one of the most difficult subjects I have because you have these incredible kids.
Trump is caught between two camps. His supporters count the end of deportation protections as a key component of his promise to strengthen immigration enforcement. In campaign speeches, Trump repeatedly promised to end the program on day one of his presidency and called the protections unconstitutional executive amnesty.
On the other side, a mix of stakeholders, including the 750,000 people who have won work permits, want to see even more immigrants allowed to come out of the shadows. And some Republican strategists are concerned that suspending DACA could energize Latino voters and liberal activists in key congressional districts during the midterm elections next year.

Granted. I think for such individuals a different path could be forged. But I just haven’t come upon a plan that sounds right yet. Has Congress addressed this?
Wisdom of Solomon. Deport the parents. If the children don’t want separation, then they go with parents. If children are still minors, they go with parents.
If only the letters would really say that! Instead of just saying “Sorry, you’re rejected,” say, “your spot was given to a Dreamer.” I think we would soon see a change then as outraged kids and parents DEMAND change.
I'm shocked. Shocked! I tell you.
Head 'em up. Move 'em out. Rawhide!
Just 8 million" What about the other 30 mil or so? No, he can't be deporting that many but...he can sure as hell let them know that them all are "targeted."
They do:
They have examined at least two options that would not directly involve Trump, according to two immigration policy advisors to the White House:
a lawsuit brought by states,
Another possible path involves the courts. A handful of governors are considering a challenge patterned on the 2014 lawsuit filed by several conservative state officials against the Obama administrations expansion of deportation protections. If they sue, Sessions could instruct his lawyers not to defend the program in court, exposing it to indefinite suspension by a federal judge.

and new legal guidance that details who is a priority for deportation.
Under that option, Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions, a vocal critic of deportation relief as a senator, would direct Department of Justice lawyers to review the program, which issues two-year work permits to people who qualify and keeps them from being categorized as deportation priorities.
If the Justice Department determines that DACA is not legal or is no longer a responsible use of prosecutorial discretion, the Department of Homeland Security would be instructed to stop awarding and renewing work permits.
Prosecuting a few moral edge cases loudly, but where the law is clear is a good way to telegraph what you should be doing if you’re an illegal alien. Getting prepared to self deport or be forced deported.
What’s forgotten is this is going to have a major impact on Mexico, particularly internal Mexican politics.
I thought a judge struck down DACA as illegal given current immigration law passed by Congress.
Someone is going to wake them up ?
What a steaming pile of BS!
"Stupid" statement of the day...acculturated
“dreamer” is a very offensive term. It is a perversion of the phrase “American Dream” and an inversion of it.
Stop issuing new ones and advise those who have current ones they will not be renewed. That gives them time to make arrangements to go home.
No new paths to citizenship. We have one and they ignored it.
The states sued to stop his second illegal action, DAPA.
Nobody sued to stop DACA because the GOP wanted him to do it.
Deport the illegals utilizing welfare services. Too many laying on our leg.
>>Yes, but we also dont put kids in prison for the sins of the parents. <<
And no one is sending them to prison now. Worst case for 99.99% of them they get a lifestyle stepdown.
Think of a middle class family whose dad gets busted for a white collar crime. Chances are they have to move to the other side of the tracks, mom has to go to work and doesn’t have time for the kids. Hamburger helper and Mac & Cheese replace sirloin and arugula. etc. etc. etc.
In this case, the kid goes back to start again. He/she can say “thanks mom and/or dad.”
This was a repeated Day One promise, one not kept. I do care the excuses, it is still a promise waiting to be fulfilled.
“In campaign speeches, Trump repeatedly promised to end the program on day one of his presidency and called the protections unconstitutional executive amnesty.
Correct. Trump on the campaign trail: “We’re going to keep the families together, but they have to go.”
“And some Republican strategists are concerned that suspending DACA could energize Latino voters and liberal activists in key congressional districts during the midterm elections next year.”
Fake news. The Latino voters were “energized” in November, and see where it got them. American voters were the most “energized”, being motivated by a candidate who would finally enforce the immigration laws, and swept Trump into office.
End DACA now, and reunite them with their families south of the border. It is the humane thing to do and will save the American taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
Oh. That makes sense. Thanks.
Trump knows it will be a balancing act and is moving accordingly - hopefully his supporters aren't so tunnel-visioned that they start "having concerns" as he faithfully goes about doing his best to keep his promises.
