A surprising name has been thrown out as a potential Republican contender for Michigan Democrat Debbie Stabenow’s Senate seat next year: Kid Rock.

The rocker’s name came up as a possible candidate at a Michigan Republican Party convention last weekend. There have been no official decisions announced as of yet.

Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, once said he tended to vote Republican but qualified himself as “more libertarian” to Rolling Stone in 2013. But he has supported several major Republican candidates. The Michigan native threw his support behind Mitt Romney in 2012 and supported Ben Carson in the 2016 presidential election. He later switched to Donald Trump as he became the party’s nominee.

Rock — or Ritchie — even started to sell pro-Trump merchandise in his official online store including t-shirts with the phrase “God, Guns & Trump” in red, white and blue-colored text.

Stabenow has been in office since 2000 and Inside Elections With Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race Solid Democrat, but Republicans feel more confident after Trump’s win there in 2016 — the first GOP presidential candidate to win there since 1988.

Nothing against Kid Rock, but what are qualifications to be a United States Senator...?

How about holding a local office first ?

You have a term-limiter Governor there who won state-wide twice. If this rocker wants to run it shows we are not serious. Come on people.

I met him at a family party in Brooklyn when he was a KID.

Said he was in a movie and i didn’t believe it.

Saw the movie and I still don’t believe it :) Nah, cute kid gangster movie.

He must be good with finances, cause he hasn’t made any money acting in centuries and still has money.

I am real and dead serious. If bat crazy al Franken can be elected to the Senate the kid certainly can be. He is loved in Michigan and has well thought out conservative principals. He will need to clean up a tad but not much. .

Check the Constitution. 30 years old, 9 years a US citizen and an inhabitant of the state they represent. Nothing about a local office is there?? Your President was just elected never having ever held elective office before. Stop being an elitist. These professional politicians are the reason we have the problems we do.

Hmm. Seems to be a new hobby. NASCAR’s now-retired Carl Edwards is supposedly toying with a move into politics. It’s the name recognition thing. Voters are shallow enough to put people like Al Franken and Jesse Ventura in office. The celebrity gets an instant bump over more qualified candidates. Kind of how Obama cruised into it. And yet - Trump benefited from his celebrity as well. Thank God!

“How about holding a local office first ?”

Like Obama did before running for Senate? Face it, Kid Rock would be much better than the alternative which is almost certain to be another democrat.

LOL, not an elitist at all.

I am Fully aware of the constitutional requirements to be a US Senator, very different from having the qualifications to be an effective Member one of the most powerful bodies in the world...

There are plenty better qualified potential candidates to run for that seat that have never been in politics.

You may now step off your high horse...

“These professional politicians are the reason we have the problems we do.”

Agreed. Anyone can do it, starting with a million dollars or so. Or the rich being willing to throw cash your way. It’s a rich man’s game. Celebrity certainly helps these days.

Maybe we are now going to see the kinds of problems “unprofessional” politicians create! And I’m not picking on Trump, but he is certainly doing OJT in the dirty world of politics now. It’s got to be stressful as hell.

He had sold out a lot of concerts though.

And he has at least one successful business outside of the entertainment industry.

Better qualifications then Debbie Stabmenow.
