Thai forces surrounded the country's biggest Buddhist temple on Thursday and the junta leader declared he was imposing control after it failed to hand over an influential monk wanted for money laundering.
With political parties and many activists silenced since a coup in 2014, the Dhammakaya Temple is a rare institution in defying the junta, which has so far trodden warily in confronting a religious group that claims millions of followers.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Article 44 of the constitution - a security measure dubbed "the dictator's law" by critics - was being used to impose control on the monastery because it had resisted law enforcement efforts.

Who’d a thunk? A money laundering Monk!
It’s not clear from someone not more familiar with what’s going on whether this was actually money laundering or simply refusal to obey “a security measure dubbed ‘the dictator’s law’ by critics.”
This “money laundering” by Monks in Thailand has been in the news for the last few months; I’ve seen the headlines and read up on it a little. It looks likely like a legitimate complaint with these Monks. They are the last ones you would normally suspect of something like this.

There present King is an ordained monk even.
“King Vajiralongkorn, an ordained monk with a British early education and a military career in Thailand, is known for setting up the Thai chain of Crown Prince Hospitals, which use internationally recognized medical practices.”
So, millions of Buddhists there, you might have a few bad Monks here and there.
