An Orange Coast College student who secretly videotaped his instructor making anti-Trump statements was suspended from school and told to write a letter of apology as well as a three-page essay about the incident.
The college suspended Caleb ONeil for the current semester and the summer term, saying he violated a Coast Community College District policy prohibiting recording someone on district property without that persons consent.
It is my hope that this experience will lead you to truly think through your actions and the consequences of those actions when making decisions in the future, Victoria Lugo, interim dean of students, wrote in a Feb. 9 letter to ONeil, whose video clips of instructor Olga Perez Stable Cox in December went viral.
William Becker, an attorney representing ONeil, said the sanctions are excessive and the students legal rights have been violated. ONeil, 19, plans to appeal and can continue to attend classes during that process, Becker said.
This is an attack by leftists in academia to protect the expressive rights of their radical instructors at the expense of the expressive rights of conservative students on campus, said Becker, president of Freedom X, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving religious and conservative freedom of expression.
Orange Coast College President Dennis Harkins had previously said his administration would investigate whether Coxs comments were appropriate and within the context of what she teaches. Whether that has concluded is unclear. College spokesman Doug Bennett said this week that the school could not comment on personnel manners, and he declined to discuss investigations involving students, citing their privacy.

A most welcome ping. Thank you.
Thought this was about teach being forced to resign.
The student got suspended and he got to write a letter apologizing to the professor. I would write: Dear A—#0le, Stick it. I’m never going to apologize to you liberal scum. Thank you and I’ll transfer to Hillsdale...
No such luck.
The Trump supporters in her classes which she subjected to ridicule, should sue her and the college, for First Amendment violations.
Got to sue. It’s the only language they understand.
You’d think being a “human sexuality professor” at a small regional college would be accomplishment enough for one person without needing to use your bully pulpit to harangue a captive audience about presidential politics.
Its not the stupidity of what she said that should give her nightmares, but the vapidity of her career.
Are students allowed to take notes? This is just bizarre. Taking notes, audio recording or video recording should all be allowed in class where the professors impart their great wisdom for later testing. But these little totalitarians don't want to be held accountable for what they choose to say in class.
The students being harassed and not taught anything that they paid a lot of money for can show their support for this teacher. They can take their money and go elsewhere and let them know why.
Horrible. My son’s friends go there. It’s a mostly conservative area, lots of Vietnamese. I heard of this but didn’t know it was OCC.
What? There are no other community colleges he can transfer to?
A coworker of mine (Vietnamese LEGAL immigrant) recently told me that he left CA for TX after he realized there were more communists in CA than there were in Vietnam.
Cracked me up immensely.
The attention led Cox, 66, an instructor at the school for 42 years, to temporarily leave her home following an onslaught of angry, sometimes threatening mail.
In an interview with the Register last month, Cox said her comments to students made in all of her three human sexuality classes were meant to comfort those who were upset about the election of Trump and offer resources should students feel discriminated against.
As a gay Latina, Cox said she was frightened by Trumps election.
Oh Dear!--Olga had to flee to her safe space after she simply tried to comfort the poor frightened students after the terror attack by President Trump--becoming President.
A rather unstable psychiatric case here presented by this scary sexologist.
God help the future students who will encounter a derby-crowned loose cannon rolling around the classrooms of Orange Coast College.
Good for her. She sounds like my Dad.
This happened some time ago. Why didn’t the Register give the date of the OFFENSE? Did it take this long for the college to decide what they were going to do? This took place at least a few weeks after the election but for some strange reason, a date isn’t given anywhere that I can find. I do remember reading the story previously as OCC was very close to where we lived before we bailed out of CA...
From the OC Register - three guesses about the “female” instructor and the first two don’t count:
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/cox-741196-college-students.html
“”My privacy has been demolished. And thats awful. Im a very private person. And its very scary, said Cox, sitting in her living room along with her longtime partner, who asked not to be identified.
The two women left town for about a week last month because, they said, they feared for Coxs safety following angry emails and threats, including one that displayed her home address. Her last week of classes was canceled. The couple disconnected their home phone. They are considering a safety alarm system.””
Heck - I always thought these “types” were proud of WHAT they are so why the desire not to be identified? Well, I can’t pretend to understand the creatures.
“”What? There are no other community colleges he can transfer to?””
Sure - three that I can name even tho’ I’ve been gone from there for 11 years - Golden West in Westminster - up the road “a piece” and Saddleback College down the road (405), Irvine Valley down the road (405).....all good Junior colleges..Don’t know where they all stack up academically but after this, why would anyone want to take a chance on OCC?
That is great and sadly - probably true!!!!
