Actually they are self centered beings who worship themselves or other like minded people.
They have rejected God and the concept of eternal life. When one believes life ends permanently at earthly death there is no incentive to pursue virtue and spiritual elevation. Instead one exists in a world where there is no morality, no honor, and no principles. Knowing that life is finite, the self centered individual strives to achieve goals without consideration of others. Hence the quest for wealth and power over other people.
