Father mourns tragic death of teen in tunnel gun case

The fates of three people who said they were on a rescue mission to help save a teenager from a New York heroin den when they were stopped with a cache of weapons could be decided by a New Jersey judge Monday.

-SNIP-

A judge is scheduled to rule Monday on whether a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officer had probable cause to stop the car at the Holland Tunnel. The officer says he stopped them over a windshield crack and objects dangling from the rearview mirror, but the defendants argue it's more likely they were pulled over because they were driving a truck adorned with cross-hairs and pro-Second Amendment decals.

This is sad all the way around, but I think the defendants have a point that they may have attracted attention because they advertised their pro-Second Amendment views.

I don't know which group to ping, but this has 2nd Amendment implications.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Never, ever, ever underestimate the well funded criminal enterprise.

It is actually, but the death by overdose of the teenager really isn’t part of this case other than arguing exigent circumstances as to why they were illegally transporting weapons where they were stopped. The story notes that the leader of the rescue mission owned a gun store in Pennsylvania, so he really can’t argue ignorance of the law.

So the case boils down to probable cause. The police have already stated the cracked windshield and obstructed view is the reason. IMO, they are going to lose, and while tragic, the reason for the mission isn’t really going to help them. I don’t like it, but there it is.

I am heart broken that any parent should have to bury a child

A cracked windshield and stuff hanging off the rear view mirror is enough to get anyone pulled over

I remember hearing that these people were related to the man who left the unexploded pipebombs. Am I mistaken?

I haven’t been following the story, so I don’t know.

stuff hanging off the rear view mirror
......................................................
Ridiculous charge when one remembers that is exactly where STATE ISSUED HANDICAP TAGS are hung.
And what was the “stuff”? A Christian cross, maybe?

Police can and will make up any excuse to pull you over if they want.

Truly a tragic story. And — just how many drug dealer types did 0b0z0 pardon? The way his daughters appear to be headed, he may be the father in a story like this one of these days...

Gun bust? Hey —they were in the armpit of the 2nd Amendment universe; what would you expect?

Handicap Placards (like mine) are supposed to be removed while driving, but few are.

The story doesn’t explain why they thought the needed the weapons, doesn’t say the child was being held hostage, and suggest the child chose to take heroin.

The story doesn’t say why they didn’t just ask the police to help them if they thought the child was in actual physical danger that would require weapons.

Why would you even drive into the Communist People’s Republic of New Jersey, but especially with a gun? NJ outlaws ammunition that is common in the free states. Again, why even go there?

Yep. A friend of mine goes to Canada to fish now and then. He often got pulled over at the border for a car search. That stopped when he took the NRA sticker off of his back bumper.

No witnesses, no evidence, it didn’t happen.

There is no profit to the police assist in this. Also, it is much safer for them to write tickets and terrorize honest citizens.

I learned never to advertise that I am pro-gun a long time ago.

About 30 years ago, I did a lot of traveling for my company. One of the problems was that the name-tag on my suitcases kept getting torn off. One of the times I renewed my NRA membership, I got a name-tag that said “I am the NRA” on one side. The next time my name-tag was torn off, I used the NRA tag.

When I got to the destination airport and tried to pick up my suitcase, it was nowhere to be found. That was not unusual. It happened about 1/4 to 1/3 of the time. It was usually on the next plane and was returned in 2 to 12 hours.

Not this time. I never saw the suitcase again. It was gone. Fortunately, there was nothing in there that was important (and certainly no guns). I don’t post anything about guns on anything I own now. That is just looking for trouble.

It is important to be squeaky clean, and polite when pulled over by the law.
