"Officials are anticipating a failure of the Auxiliary Spillway at Oroville Dam within the next 60 minutes (5:45 p.m.)," the California Department of Water Resources said on Facebook.

The Yuba County Office of Emergency Services said on Facebook an evacuation has been for "all Yuba County on the valley floor."

The city of Marysville and Yuba County have been ordered to evacuate, the Marysville Police Department tweeted.

The geology there was not the best place for a dam.

The dam was originally built there to keep people from picking up gold nuggets from the bottom of the Feather River.
(not a joke)

There is potential for soil liquification during earthquakes. I wonder would would happen to the resisting force of liquefied soil in an earthen dam.

I've read where they have been having problems with the spillway since 2006. Here is a pic from 2013. No money was appropriated to fix it right.

High speed rails to nowhere are much more important than this!

Seriously, had the normal spillway been intact, this problem may not have happened because they'd have controlled the river level with it properly without the failure and subsequent erosion that occurred halfway down the hill.

Moonbeam needs to tell everyone where their tax $$ went.

(Hint: freebies for illegals....not da#n dam repair 😡 )

It's real simple. Dams don't vote Democrat.

The rain is predicted to start up again on Wednesday and continue 7 days from that point. Current predictions say another 12 inches of rain.

What do you think that announcer is going to say when that next wave of water hits and overwhelms the dam?

Some images, in case you are just learning about this like me:

Here is the dam on the right, the main spillway, the emergency spillway, which is a concrete spillway barely visible but in between the main spillway and the parking lot. The main areas of concern are that the water is so high right now it has flooded the parking lot to the left and is spilling over the hillside from there. This is not reinforced by concrete, it is just packed dirt, and is not considered part of the containment. The water is strong enough to erode this area quickly, and so it will erode a pathway around and maybe under the cement emergency spillway. Fortunately though, this will not affect the main dam, which is why they are only forecasting the top 30 ft. of water from the lake to be released.

As others have said the emergency spillway is the area to the left of the main concrete spillway.

It’s a waterfall right now and the resisting force of the hill holding back the lake is being eroded back toward the concrete top. Once enough resisting force has been removed the lake will have its way.

Earthen dams are mostly fractured rock.

They are sealed on the upstream side with about 8-10 feet of clay. The clay stays moist and flexible.

I don’t think they know exactly why the main spillway failed. Do we have a failing concrete problem here. This could turn into a very expensive re-review and fix for California. Hope Moonbeam has a few extra bucks to spare.
Goodbye socialist Californians.

The state Democrat politicians downplay it because they are joined at the hip with the environazis, those who prevent increased water storage.

More accurately, they are on record demanding that all dams be removed!

They'll double down on stupid, and on the bodies of 100,000 drowned Californians, by saying if the damned dam wasn't there to fail all those poor, poor people would still be alive...

You’d be surprised what governments will allow to happen to restrict access to natural resources, such as Oro (gold). Or maybe you wouldn’t :)

“They are now discussing how to haul large rocks in with helicopters to plug the hole.”

This sounds exactly like what they were discussing to plug the holes just after the levees broke in NO after Katrina...Just sayin’...we know how that turned out...
