Good Riddance! Family’s brutally honest obituary for Galveston man

GALVESTON, Texas — Obituaries reflect the deceased person's life and their impact on others.

The family of one Galveston man decided to be brutally honest when writing his obituary. Let's be real, the truth hurts, even when you're six feet under.

Leslie Ray Charping passed away last month at the age of 74 from cancer. His family writes, in part:

"He leaves behind 2 relieved children; a son Leslie Roy Charping and daughter, Shiela Smith along with six grandchildren and countless other victims including an ex wife, relatives, friends, neighbors, doctors, nurses and random strangers."

"With Leslie's passing he will be missed only for what he never did; being a loving husband, father and good friend. No services will be held, there will be no prayers for eternal peace and no apologizes to the family he tortured. Leslie's remains will be cremated and kept in the barn until "Ray", the family donkey's wood shavings run out. Leslie's passing proves that evil does in fact die and hopefully marks a time of healing and safety for all."

Could have been just a normal everyday republican living amongst a family of hate filled leftists that resented his reason and logic. Someone took this chance to “twist the knife”, So to speak, When he wasn’t able to fight back.

It comes across as inappropriate to me

Just say nothing but some prayers over his wretchedness

Nobody was born wanting to be an asshat

Like being crazy ...nobody wants to be

Like twists the weak

Something similar happened in our neighborhood but not quite this bad. My neighbor had 5 children and died of cancer not too long ago. I had heard rumors that he was kind of an ass and threw things at his wife among other things.

Any ways at the funeral home no one came forward to say anything about him. The priest gave it some time and asked again if anyone was going to say anything. All silence.

On the other hand, he’s not around to defend himself.

who knows if it’s true?

I know the phrase “don’t air our dirty laundry” can be heavily utilized to shut abuse victims up.

but to attack a man publicly after he’s dead seems below the belt. What if it’s all untrue, or at least exaggerated?

well, he’s not here to be hurt, either, I guess.

Obituary mentions mental health issues. Perhaps he was sick and never received proper care.

A little more information:

“Charping also had a handful of run-ins with the law, according to Harris County court records. His first conviction dates back to 1979, when he pleaded guilty to assault.
He also pleaded guilty in 2008 to assaulting a family member by pouring hot liquid on his then-wife of 40 years. The next year he pleaded guilty to violating the resulting restraining order by calling another family member and threatening to kill her.”

I don’t feel a bit sorry for that asshole.

Obit reads like putting a curse on the deceased to hold him in the ground.

" This is a pretty ugly obituary full of hate and lacking in grace. "

Only half as bad as the ones Bill & Hillary should get.

The obit mentions mental health issues at least 3 times, certainly two. We have such a crappy mental health system in the USA at this time I defy anyone who reads this and thinks this guy deserves all of it to find someone who doesn’t at one point or another in his or her life.

I base my comment on what I recall of another article on the prevalence of mental illness in this country: 30% are mentally ill all the time; 30% are marginally ill and frequently not ill all the time and the rest are, theoretically sane all the time...until they become one of the 30% in the marginally ill group.

Since his family didn’t describe his mental illness, I would have to guess based on my personal experience of living with a wonderful/horrible man with bipolar disease that Larry was probably bipolar. A bunch of his family may have the same disorder. Difficult to diagnose (oh, but they can be so charming!) and almost impossible to treat.

I suspect everything they said has a good chance of being true, but I would bet money there was more...it just surfaced less often so it didn’t count.

What a shame we don’t treat our mentally ill better.

What a shame.

What you do to other people gets remembered... bad, OR good.

A wasted life, clearly.
