DeVos Backlash Sees Parents Threatening to Homeschool Kids
NBC News ^ | 02/09/2017 | by JON SCHUPPE

Among the initial opposition to Betsy DeVos' confirmation this week as education secretary were calls on social media by parents, including liberals, to start homeschooling their children.

That reaction to DeVos — a billionaire school-choice advocate who has never worked, attended or sent her kids to a public school — reflects how polarizing her nomination was.

It also comes layered with paradox.

That's because DeVos, whom the Senate confirmed Tuesday to head the Education Department, is herself a big proponent of homeschooling.

In a 2013 interview with Philanthropy magazine, DeVos, who has invested in private and charter schools and is an advocate for their expansion, said homeschooling was "another perfectly valid educational option."

She continued:

We've seen more and more people opt for homeschooling, including in urban areas. What you're seeing is parents who are fed up with their lack of power to do anything about where their kids are assigned to go to school. To the extent that homeschooling puts parents back in charge of their kids' education, more power to them.

DeVos' emphasis on school choice is a natural fit for the homeschool movement, whose members span the political spectrum but are largely conservative Christians who resist government oversight. That group has helped fuel remarkable growth in recent years, carrying the movement from the fringe and closer to the mainstream.

For years more and more people have been home schooling because of the state of the public schools. Why hasn’t this been reported as a revolt against liberal schools? Libs won’t home school - it requires too much commitment and effort.

Wouldn’t removing their kids from the local public school system have the effect of decreasing the public school’s funding, thus necessitating a decrease in the need for school staff, which will have the result of lowering the amount of union dues and financial support for their favorite local public education unions?

LOL!

Home schooling would be the best thing ever for most of these kids.

Which is why it's all talk for progressives; 99% won't do it. It's like threatening to leave the country because Trump won.

From the flurry of articles, this means liberals now support homeschooling, gun ownership and states’ rights. If Trump’s victory means they support what conservatives have for years, all the better.

(title):" DeVos Backlash Sees Parents Threatening to Homeschool Kids "

Parents are preparing to start homeschooling their kids in fear of DeVos
How Ironic !!
That's what DeVos stand for, abandoning failing school systems, and that is why DeVos is opposed by teachers Unions
- a voucher system so that parents can get their children out of failing teacher union run schools, and into superior education.

Uh, that would be a good thing. Please do so. Your kids will be smarter. And you will be more involved.

Betsy DeVos would be pleased.

Not yet tired of winning.

I strongly suspect Liberal homeschooling would quickly devolve into NO schooling.

“Any child that is being raised in a liberal household is being subjected to abuse.”

Absolute nonsense

That’s like the libs calling all Trump voters racist, xenophobic, mysogynists.

parents, including liberals, to start homeschooling their children.

Well, they'll obviously need to be regulated, to make sure they are being taught useful life skills, and Judeao/Christian values.
