Sen. Schumer says he has ‘serious concerns’ about Judge Gorsuch after meeting
New York Daily News ^ | 02/07/2017 | Cameron Joseph

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he has "serious concerns" about Judge Neil Gorsuch after meeting with the Supreme Court nominee on Tuesday — and struggling to get straight answers from him.

"The judge avoided answers like the plague. This president is testing fundamental underpinnings of our democracy and its institutions. These times deserve answers and judge Gorsuch did not provide them. I have serious, serious concerns about this nominee," Schumer told reporters during Democrats' weekly press conference.

Schumer said he'd asked Gorsuch specifically about whether a ban on Muslims entering the country would pass constitutional muster and what his view was on the emoluments clause of the Constitution — a conflicts-of-interest clause Democrats say President Trump violated because of his refusal to fully divest from his businesses when he became President.

"I asked him about the emoluments clause and he refused to even say what the framers thought about that clause," Schumer complained.

The Democratic leader didn't fully close the door on voting for Gorsuch, but the comments were the latest indication that he's ready to dig in his heels and battle the nomination.

And while Schumer said the nomniee is "clearly a very smart, polite and capable man who loves being a judge," he warned that his nomination "comes at a perilous time in the relationship between the executive and judicial branches."

Sorry Chuck. But anybody who supported a nominee (kagan) who as Solicitor General, defended the obamacare program against legal challenges, then as a Justice neglected to recuse herself from hearing a SC challenge, that senator should be mocked for stupidity.

Obviously he has a lot he is hiding, and a lot to be worried about.

Did Chuckie shed a tear of “concern?”

There is no doubt Chuckie will vote against. The only suspense is will he filibuster.

BTW, it sounds like he was trying to get Gorsuch to go on the record as to issues that could well go to the Court. Would then try to disqualify him, I suppose.

The “serious concerns” being that he grandstands enough for the Democratic Party base.

Schumer could appear on Grimm and shape-shift into a reptile and not even require computer graphics. All he has to do is smile.

I think he will get well over 70 votes. Would like to see 80-85.

I gotta give Schumer credit. He has taken on a role in Washington which pretty much guarantees that he's going to serve as Donald Trump's punching bag for the next 4+ years, and he is playing the game very well.

His job is to run around Washington and put up as many temporary road blocks as possible without actually accomplishing anything ... for the sole purpose of convincing leftist people and organizations to keep sending contributions to the Democrat Party.

To my previous point:

The photo there is very important. After initially insisting that he wasn't going to even bother meeting with Gorsuch ...

... there is a huge photo of Schumer meeting with Gorsuch, posted all over the media.

Concern, for Senator Schumer, is one of those commodities that has a vastly shifting value depending on whether it either advances or puts a check on his agenda. Nobody needs the support of Charles Schumer, but Charles Schumer needs the support of a LOT of people, some of whom owe him nothing, to make even the smallest of moves.

Senator Schumer’s predecessor, Harry Reid of Nevada, left a HUGE time bomb ticking in the Senate when the “nuclear option”, which only required a simple majority for confirmation of the nominations by a sitting President for most appointive offices, was triggered. Only one nomination, that for anyone for the Supreme Court, has not yet been subject to that “nuclear option”, but now that the precedent has been set, that limitation, too, could be swept away.

If the objections raised by Senator Schumer are too strenuous, then applying the “nuclear option” one more time may forever seal the deal.

Speak carefully, Senator Schumer. You may well regret the intemperate language.

Schumer’s main problem is that the judge is white Christian male
