BALTIMORE (WJZ) — After being robbed a handful of times in the past few months, one Baltimore coffee shop is no longer accepting cash to stop the robberies and keep their staff safe.
Nowadays, many people don’t carry cash in their wallets day-to-day, and at Park Cafe in Bolton Hill, cash payments are no longer on the menu.
“We’re not going to accept cash anymore,” said Park Cafe & Coffee owner David Hart. “I’m going to take that out of the equation.”
Park Cafe was robbed five times from October to January. While the armed suspect is now behind bars, those crimes pushed Hart to ditch the cash drawer altogether. (snip)
Loyola assistant professor J.P. Krahel tells WJZ’s Devin Bartolotta that a cashless society could leave some behind.
“The problem is, going cashless tends to benefit the wealthier members of society and tends to hurt the poorer ones,” said Krahel.
But for this Baltimore business, cash is taking a back seat to safety.

I buy coffee out about once every two weeks.
When I do, I simply pay the bill if it sound’s reasoned, and then check it at home.
I find errors on anywhere from 15% to 30% of the tickets. They’re always in my favor.
The other day I went in to buy coffee. I bought other items too. The guy failed to charge me for an item and I had to remind him.
Perhaps that’s part of the why here. Maybe their staff can’t make change and it’s just easier for management.
Pilfering should be eliminated too.
What does it say on the money?
They have no choice but to accept cash.
So now the crooks are assured that everyone coming out w/coffee has a credit card.

Many blacks shop in my town because their nearby food desert (Newark NJ) has almost no supermarkets; I never see them use cash. In fact, sometimes the cashier will direct people to other lines because she has to spend a lot of time processing some kind of paper vouchers for a black customer (not the standard EBT cards, but actual paper slips).
I’m trying to get my wife out of the habit of using the debit card if avoidable; there is a lot of exposure to fraud out there. Sometimes it is just more practical (supermarket trips for hundreds of dollars), but using it for smaller purchases (gas or deli stuff) isn’t worth the risk - especially in our area, where many of those businesses are run by foreigners.
On top of that, many of the protections provided by credit cards limiting your exposure don’t apply to debit cards; your whole account can be drained quickly.
Not giving the thugs the cash space to destroy!

I really don’t like the idea of society getting rid of cash, we should probably be going less “cyber”, not more.
I agree; except for weekly grocery shopping I’m almost strictly cash. One of the biggest proponents of cashless transactions are business owners; employee theft is huge problem with cash - the temptation is just too great for many. I know skimmers are a problem with cards, but that is between the customer and the skimmer - not the employer directly.
