UNITED NATIONS — Nikki R. Haley, the new American ambassador to the United Nations, condemned Russia on Thursday for its recent “aggressive actions” in eastern Ukraine.
“We do want to better our relations with Russia,” Ms. Haley said during her first remarks to an open briefing of the United Nations Security Council. “However, the dire situation in eastern Ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of Russian actions.”
She made it clear that American sanctions imposed after Russia’s annexation of Crimea would remain in place.
During her Senate confirmation hearing last month, Ms. Haley also expressed support for continuing the sanctions and accused Russia of committing war crimes in the Syrian conflict. But her strong criticism of the government of President Vladimir V. Putin put her at odds with President Trump, who has expressed a desire for warmer relations with the Kremlin.
Her Russian counterpart, Vitaly I. Churkin, told reporters after the meeting that it would be “frivolous” to speculate on whether the Trump administration would be friendlier than that of President Barack Obama.

The un’s only valid purpose is it is a place to voice your opinion for all the world to see. I think Haley voiced the US position exactly right. Trunp is only beginning to shine.
It’s a terribly flawed institution. However, Haley has indicated that good relations with Russia depend on good behavior by Putin (since he is essentially owns the country). Putin’s chauvinistic and aggressive policies won’t get him restored relations with the West, and Trump won’t be his tool.
It’s our nature to extend the hand of friendship. Bush tried it with Putin. Obama tried it with Putin. Trump wants to try it with Putin. That’s how we are.
The Crimea statement is as dumb ass anything McCain can say and that’s the first thing she blabbers about at the UN. Troll won’t follow this loon

I’m less concerned about the recent hostilities in the Ukraine than by the Haley statement that sanctions would remain in place as long as Russia remained in Crimea. Russia will never leave Crimea, originally part of Mother Russia, up until Kruschev, who was half Ukrainian, gave it away to Ukraine in the 60’s. It was always part of Russia before that.
Plus, the U.S. was intimately involved in the coup against the Russian oriented leader of the Ukraine, that lead to the hostilities in Ukraine in the first place. What right did the Obama Admin have to stir up trouble in a country that borders Russia? The Ukraine is not in our backyard, it is in Russia’s backyard, and they were upset with reason.
Crimea is Russia’s warm water port where they keep many of their ships. After the coup, they took over Crimea to protect their ports from the western leaning newly installed Ukrainian gov’t via a western instigated coup. I might add that the Ukraine is a thugocracy with Nazi-like propensities. We should never have been mucking around in Russia’s traditional backyard; the West opened up a Pandora’s box.
As a resident of lovely South Carolina, I’m more than willing to see Haley spout the neocon line to the UN, ineffectively and in futility, than to continue to be Governor of our state. Power-wise, it’s a massive step down for someone who really needed to step down.
Yes, and the hand of friendship is way less important to Putin than the restoration of the Soviet Empire, with him as Putin The Great, President for Life.
You think she’s gone rogue? You think her boss, President Trump, doesn’t know she was going to uphold American interests and values? I guess you think Trump tolerates subordinates who don’t follow his policies.
Using your logic the UK should be able to lob artillery into the Irish Republic. Do you always support tyrants and empires?
