Schumer: Trump's Supreme Court pick will need 60 votes
The Hill ^ | 2/1/17 | JORDAIN CARNEY

Posted on 02/01/2017 11:14:36 AM PST by jeannineinsd

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) insisted on Wednesday that Neil Gorsuch, Trump's Supreme Court pick, will need 60 votes to clear the upper chamber.

"We Democrats will insist on a rigorous but fair process. There will be 60 votes for confirmation," he said from the Senate floor. "There will be 60 votes for confirmation."

Trump's nomination of the well-respected conservative jurist is kicking off a high-stakes battle in the Senate. Five progressive lawmakers, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), have already come out in opposition to Trump's nominee.

Schumer said requiring 60 votes for confirmation of Gorsuch is "the right thing to do."

Though Merkley has said he will filibuster Trump's pick, Schumer is publicly staying on the fence and hasn't explicitly backed a filibuster.

But Schumer is defending his party's push for Gorsuch to get 60 votes, noting that previous Supreme Court nominees have been able to win bipartisan support.

"It was a bar met by each of President Obama's nominations," he said. "In my mind 60 votes is the appropriate way to go whether there is a Democratic president or a Republican president, a Democratic Senate or a Republican Senate."

The back-and-forth over Trump's nominee comes as the president endorsed going "nuclear" and lowering the requirement to a simple majority if Democrats block his nominee.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has repeatedly indicated that he does not want to take what would be a historic step and change Senate rules.

Schumer appeared to push against Trump on Wednesday, arguing that if Gorsuch can't get 60 votes, then the "problem" is with the president's pick.

You’re exactly right. This is a low stakes battle for Dems. The composition of the court won’t actually change.

All of that said, we should be careful not to project reasonableness onto democrats.

There are a few Democrats who are indicating that this isn’t the hill they want to die on. They want to keep their powder dry for the NEXT SCOTUS picks that may come up if Justice Kennedy and/or Justice Ginsberg retire.

Schmuck “Pagliacci” Schumer is doing what all Democrats do when they are out of power - act like they are still in power. Elections have consequences (”I won!” - Obama), and the Dems are in position to become a super-minority party as these antics continue.

UpChuck had a large group of insane democrats protesting outside his Brooklyn condo demanding to know why he isn’t standing against Trump’s cabinet appointments and getting them rejected. These people are nuts so Chuck has no option but to toe the hardest line possible, otherwise they’ll be coming for his head. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.

“There will be 60 votes for confirmation.”

Sounds like he’s admitting some Democrats will vote for him. There are 10 Democrat senators up for reelection in states Trump won. Do they really want to be seen as obstructing Trump’s pick?

Perhaps you should do some reading in the vast time that you walk the streets searching for a tv camera.

Reading? Reading? Chuckles don't need no stinkin' reading! As he constantly reminds us, Chuckles made a perfect score on his SAT!

Yup. He’s telling his vulnerable folk it’s okay to vote Gorsuch. It’s obvious to me, anyways. He doesn’t want the Nuclear Option precedent. He’s saving up for Ginsberg.

The nuclear or constitutional option is a parliamentary procedure that allows the U.S. Senate to override a rule or precedent by a simple majority of 51 votes, instead of by a supermajority of 60 votes. ... They immediately put the issue to the full Senate, which decides by majority vote. Thank You Harry Reid..

the Reid option should be done early and often.
get the dems used to getting blown away at every turn... and it will dispirit and depress the followers... and they will act out in ways that send them Guantanimo as Terroristas.

The sooner we start bull dozing the democrats, the sooner we can complete the policies that will make the United States of America GREAT again. Sixteen years of this type of onslaught, would set the devil and his kingdom back 250 years.

Unless it is actually “THAT” time. The end, so to speak, or the beginning... depending on what side one is cheering for.

Do a quick work and cut it short in righteousness.
