I am sure the Republic of California will sell the USA all the fruit and veggies they want.

California as a country would quickly look like Argentina under Juan Peron. There would be an immediate exit of many large businesses rightfully fearing confiscatory taxes and even more regulation as well as a highly unstable currency. California would also lose any military support or protection. Imagine the moonbeams in Sacramento creating any semblance of a military and maybe just relying on peace and love for protection. Undoubtedly they would have totally open borders so there would be a groundswell of illegal immigration. I would expect that many residents and likely more than a few of the Hollywood lefties would be fleeing too. Utter chaos.

The high Fed Tax revenues from CA are skewed by a huge headquarters effect - profits are booked and taxed in CA on business activity that took place across the whole country.
With an independent CA these entities would still have to pay tax in the US, just as, say, Apple has to pay tax on its operations in European countries.
And this applies to the other sort of skew, the owner effect. CA is full of investors, capitalists, coupon clippers, that collect dividends and capital gains and interest on securities that reflect assets in the rest of the country. Same thing here.
And this works the other way too, of course, but it would all be heavily skewed towards CA.

What is it with all of the Frenchified, cheese-eating, surrender-monkey Freepers? For over a decade you've been complaining about illegal immigration and how it's going to balkanize and break apart this country and, when it starts to happen, you do not want to fight. It is not traditional Americans living in California that want to succeed, it is mostly illegal immigrants, recent immigrants, and their children born in America.

America built California from the wilderness. America created the high tech, oil and gas, defense, and entertainment industries. Mexico City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento will be pits of glowing cinders before we let California succeed at the instigation of Mexico. Furthermore if this secession starts America should punish Mexico by seize all of the west coast of Mexico and east to the continental divide. America already has half of the Mexican people so we might as will have the land too.

Agreed.

This entire secession thing is nothing more than a “wet-dream” conjured up by left-wing billionaire’s and their retarded friends in Sacramento, LA and San Fran.

Ain’t gonna happen. It may have been possible 30 years ago when it was solvent, but now California is bankrupt and too dependent upon the federal government for it’s daily bread.

This is what happens when you let the lunatics run the asylum. The people behind this dog & pony show are delusional and having difficulty accepting reality.

Sorry to have offended you but that is what is living in Southern California, and your State Government is permitting it...

You can blame others all you want, but it’s YOUR State, so take care of it!!!

Life could get VERRRRY interesting for the California secessionists.

Let’s saw, for fun, that these wild eyed fools do successfully secede. Then what?

First, they have to become independent when it comes to both power and water generation. I don’t really see either political party much less the average citizen cutting any sweetheart deals with independent California.

Second, how will they deal with a drastic reduction in international trade? Yes. they are the 7th largest world economy, but as part of the US. I would suspect a double tariff system on any products transiting California for the remaining States. At that point it becomes better to ship directly to the Eastern seaports.

Third, anyone traveling out of California will have to go through international border controls - potentially, think TSA on steroids. That includes any trip to Nevada and stays in Las Vegas.

Fourth what about a new national - New California - currency? I really don’t see the US allowing New California using US currency as its national currency.

Finally, what happens when significant parts of the independent national of California want to succeed from it? If California could succeed why couldn’t individual counties, or groups of counties succeed from it? New California could be reduced to a weirdly shaped coastal nation like Chili with a larger area in the southern desert east of LA.

Again, just some random thoughts with my first cup of coffee.

in reality, the 53 congressional districts would be reapportioned to the rest of the country (House would remain at 435 seats).

Why would you think that?

The number of representatives in the house is not cast in stone at 435.

It is a function of the population in each state and congressional district.

Whenever a new state has joined the Union the number of representatives in the House was increased.

Why would the number stay at 435 when there would be one less state and 53 fewer congressional districts?

Why would the USA all of a sudden tariff CA imports when we, like a cheap whore, let every other country import duty free? Why the sudden protectionism?

I am for a 3 state solution. Much more reasonable and far less disruptive. Not to mention the libs would be instantly rendered powerless.:)

State 1: LA to San Fran (west of I-5) would be one state.
State 2:Fresno north (including coast north of San Fran and the Canada/US border)
State 3:Everything else south of Fresno including Mexican/US border.

Not in our lifetimes. The state may split into two parts though. It will be similar to the Carolinas.

With the cataclysmic loss of every single vestige of military presence including 31 bases, along with all military personnel and their economic impact, the exodus of veterans receiving federal benefits, a $2 trillion bill for 10% of the national debt, the loss of $66 billion in federal contracts and $43 billion in grants... not to mention the assured separation of the nine counties of the North State and intention of Mexico to retake the remainder of CA...

The Calexit types had better think this through, because their state will be far more negatively affected.

The problem with this whole creation of a new state is Article 4 Section 3 of the constitution:

"New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

The rest of the state and the Congress has to go along with it. It's only happened once, West Virginia....

Added:

The liberal infestation of California (State #1) would now be boxed in. No access to either the Mexican or Canadian border.

They would have the EC equivalent of a Connecticut or Rhode Island.

Where do these idiots expect to "go" when they secede?

Does this mean they can default on their billions in debt? Or will they ask for foreign aid from Trump to get bailed out?

Will they have an army of Hollywierds and hashtags to defend their borders? Or if they don't believe in borders, does that mean anybody can come and go as they please? Or are they going to "ban" immigrants from the US who supported Trump?

And if they are so hung-up on controlling climate change, does that mean they will stop "their air" from circulating with "other countries' air"? Or are they going to "clean" their climate and stop non-climate change air from entering?

Nothing nuttier than a bunch of nuts from California.
