Bay area restaurant industry employment and even general retail employment have fallen, and are possibly headed towards a steep decline. One has to wonder how obvious things will have to get before the press takes the negative effects of the area's mandated sky-high minimums seriously.

Randy Nelson, who opened the first of the De La Cruz delis in 1974, said the costs of doing business are tougher than ever. He’s facing a 50 percent rent increase on the deli space when his lease is up, and a San Jose minimum wage ordinance will drive his labor costs up 45 percent in the next several years. Nelson, 73, will close or sell the deli and retire.
Jeffrey Stout, restaurant industry veteran and the chef-owner of Orchard City Kitchen in Campbell, said it’s frustrating to see mandated minimum wage increases without tipped minimum wages, a practice in many states (but not in California) in which tips can be credited toward meeting the minimum wage.

it's starting to look as if struggling San Francisco-area employers at the low-paying end of the labor market, even beyond those who are calling it quits, are doing exactly what sensible economists have predicted they would do in response to large minimum-wage increases. They're cutting jobs.

I agree if that is the case; no doubt. The items I mentioned were to get others on board (politicians not funded by the state employee unions).
True, though many of them won’t work a day in their lives. I posted last night that here in NJ they need immigrants to prepare the fast food for the native welfare populations that love to eat it but wouldn’t dream of working there...

Yes, Michael Savage was first to coin the term, “Liberalism is a mental disorder.” He was also the first to coin “compassionate conservative”, which he meant not to be too extreme, be reasonable. GW Bush stole his term and used it to support everything from illegal aliens to the “religion of peace”, medicare D, and etc.

Ha! The America of my youth does not exist. If WWI veterans were alive today, they would think they were living in some oppressive totalitarian nation, not America. If the Founders were alive today, they would consider themselves government slaves with no freedom at all.the income tax alone would oppress them. Never mind the millions of regulations on their lives and businesses. Permission to buy a gun? Permission to own a house? Permission to drive a car? Permission to marry? Permission to travel?

Good question. My guess is yes.
Few realize public sector union wages are tied to min wage, even though all of them make many, many times that amount.
Many contracts (most) will a clause like ...’twice the min wage, plus X amount.’ If ‘X’= $20, plus twice min it means they make $35 hr.
When liberals push to double the min wage it isn’t because they care one whit about the poor, it’s their own greed they look out for.

The article mentioned that some restaurants are doing away with tables (and the personnel who attend them ) and going to a belly-up-to-the-bar-type “dining experience”.
Businesses will have to fire employees, then replace them with self directed kiosks, robots, belly-up-to-the-bar-type “dining experience” , raise prices, ... or go broke.
