Trump threatens Mexico's biggest cash source
CNN ^

Posted on 01/26/2017 12:16:33 PM PST by TigerClaws

Mexico's biggest cash cow is under threat from President Donald Trump.

The country's largest source of cash comes from Mexicans living in the United States. That is now under the microscope after Trump issued an executive order Wednesday to start building a wall on the border.

During his campaign, Trump said multiple times that Mexico will pay for the wall. He even threatened to halt or tax cash transfers -- known as remittances -- from the U.S. to Mexico if the country refused to pay for it. Powered by SmartAsset.com SmartAsset.com

"They will reimburse us for the cost of the wall. That will happen, whether it's a tax or a payment -- probably less likely that it's a payment, but it will happen," Trump said on January 11.

Yep, this is the quickest and easiest way to get compliance from the mooch on our southern border. No need for tariffs, a remittance tax will do the trick. Make it high enough and you will see the illegals heading back where they came from.

Thank you for your reasoned and compassionate response! This issue is so much more complex than either side wants to acknowledge!

The liberals like to pretend they care, but they are sentencing illegals to a life in the shadows, with no hope to improve their lot in life, just because it gives them more control/bigger government programs!

The conservatives demand “law and order” but turn their backs on many hard-working people who face horrible choices and are simply trying to get by and take care of their families.

The conditions for the average worker in Mexico are horrific and that is why many come here illegally. But, the US has allowed it because we like cheap labor. It’s time to look at the whole picture and part of that solution has to be an overhaul of the entire system as it now stands, which does include figuring out exactly who is here and then coming up with a comprehensive plan that respects both national sovereignty and human rights! And the government of Mexico needs to step up and be part of that discussion!

Charge a 2% fee on the money going to Mexico. Too high and they'll drive it down or do some other avoidance tactic. 2% they'll pay.

A 2% Wall Fee will give the US about a half billion dollars per year, based on current remittances of $24.6B.

Seems fair to me.

And we might even consider some sort of credit based on how many illegals move back to Mexico. I would think an incentive to the Mexican government to bring their people home, and keep them there ought to be worth something, too.

I’m astounded this made it past the editors at CNN. It has some facts in it and doesn’t slobber all over the Mexicans

A cardinal rule of diplomacy is to not threaten, bargain.

In this case, the average Mexican is offended by this idea, and President Trump knows it. So what is the purpose of saying it repeatedly?

Off the top of my head two ideas: to either give the Mexican president political capital in Mexico by “standing up” to Trump. Or, to convince the Mexicans to break NAFTA, making it easier for the US to do so while avoiding any penalties.

In any case, the actual goals are different and better than the stated goals.

Add to this with: every illegal caught will serve one year helping with the actual construction of the wall.

LET THEM drive it back over the border. Offer a reward to border patrol agents for every car full of cash they seize.

I was thinking the same thing.

But what if they buy a car with the cash, and drive south across the border, then sell the car to convert it to cash. I imagine there would be a lot of cars going into Mexico, and fewer coming out. Probably to be exported from Mexico to Cuba. Doesn't matter, we want the illegals out, let them ride out in style.

2% is nothing - charge 20%

Make it hurt so bad that it won’t even be worth it for them to stay here.

Oh and did I mention I’m Hispanic?

I’m a self-hating ‘racist’ of the worst type. A true “UNCLE TOMAS”

The government has been encouraging Mexicans to illegally enter our country, get benefits fraudulently, work illegally and send the proceeds home.

I remember when their President told Mexican Citizens they could vote in both countries, wonder what the motive was for that statement.

Same motive as W. in not enforcing the laws and borders, to turn us in to North Mexico.

Unless they’re going to tax all foreign transfers, all that will happen is that someone will open a business in the Caymans or someplace that will transfer the money via that third country for half the fee.

Ever notice how the discussion over the years never seems to touch on the reasons Mexico is not prosperous? It has a good climate, oil, a work force, nearness to a wealthy nation, etc. So what are the real problems? Is it corruption and failure to have a consistent rule of law? Is it the drugs? Is it just Socialism in general? Seems like the disaffected need to stay there and be part of a revolution or reform. It is time for that country to fix itself. Their main export seems to be their PEOPLE! That is just strange and not good for them or for us. It is like some sort of warped, institutionalized slave trade masquerading as “kindness”.

The bodies of "reformers" are found every morning in Mexico.

Make it illegal to drive a new car over the border. :)

Agreed—though I want illegals out, so it should be a rapidly declining flow of funds.

The Catholic church’s grown program for the U.S. is illegal alien invasion. They assist illegals at every level come into the U.S.

Overbreeding due to lack of birth control is a big cause (and due to Catholicism) of the Mexican poverty. Corruption and the drug demand in U.S. are two others.
