Bill would make NM sanctuary state (Dems control legislature)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | January 24, 2017 | Dan McKay

Posted on 01/25/2017 10:19:37 AM PST by CedarDave

Rep. Patricia Roybal Caballero, D-Albuquerque, is sponsoring a bill that aims to prohibit state and local law enforcement agencies from enforcing federal immigration laws.

The move is somewhat symbolic, as police departments and sheriff’s offices say they already focus on enforcing local laws ... and county jails in New Mexico generally don’t honor immigration holds requested by federal agents.

A 2011 executive order by Gov. Susana Martinez directs State Police to inquire about immigration status after someone’s been arrested, but Roybal Caballero’s bill doesn’t directly address whether that would still be allowed.

Practical impact aside, the legislation is at odds with the Trump administration. Enforcement of federal immigration law was a centerpiece of his campaign.

Trump has said he wants to end sanctuary cities, block funding to cities that don’t cooperate with federal authorities and build an impenetrable wall along the Mexican border.

That doesn’t bother Rep. Javier Martinez, an Albuquerque Democrat who supports the immigration bill introduced in the state House.

The bill, he said, is important to ensure that crime victims and witnesses are comfortable talking to police.

The bill says state and local law enforcement agencies shall not use state or federal resources “for the purpose of detecting or apprehending persons whose only violation of law is that they are persons of foreign citizenship who have entered or are residing in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws,” unless otherwise legally required to.

Roybal Caballero said the proposal would protect immigrant families and ensure that local law enforcement focuses on violent crime, “rather than tearing families apart.”

“Now that we have a threat to our state’s values in the White House,” she said, “we must do everything we can to keep our families strong and together.”

Well it is named “New” Mexico, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised, particularly when almost everyone in government there is Hispanic.

Maybe a new bill in Congress would make NM the first state free of federal funds including social security, military retirements, everything.

Then I might have to move 5-miles across the state line into Texas. But that might hit Tijeras Slim hard unless he opens a pay-per-shot gun range!

I guess they wouldn’t mind if we annexed the entire state to Mexico.

Look at the blue county pattern in the state and the northbound interstate highway routes through the state. You can immediately see the state is a portal for illegal immigration. It is a big moneymaker for the state.

Not to worry.

The good folks in Texas will take care of you. I think the town is Eagleton, Texas. They are in the business of providing in state residence to thousands of people that live in RV’s and move constantly about. You can get a drivers license and voter registration and other services. You can stay in New Mexico and be a Texas resident

My good college friend and wife retired and lived on the road like that for 12 years.

This sounds harsh, but if defunded sanctuary cities punt all their illegals there, it literally will be NEW Mexico. Avoid the rush, you and Slim come on to Texas.

“...Not for long...”

Yep. I expect Trump to come down hard on these LAWLESS DemocRATS running these sanctuary states. Right now the RATS are desperate to keep their dwindling voter base “happy” by doing this deliberate law breaking carrying on the Obama/Hillary/Holder crime wave.

It will take Trump to do it — the GOPe is useless.

Makes me wonder some things like how much influence drug cartels have on N.M. Govt. and how many illegal aliens really live in N.M. What this fool fails to realize, her State must follow the Constitution of the United States. In not doing so, Feds can and will intervene. American citizens must always take precendence over all others!!! An alternative is for neighboring states to secure their borders and freeways from N.M. to protect their citizens. Semper Fi

We are really on the brink of a civil war in this country. You have the media and Soros and these illegal activists on the one side, and law and order on the other.

Why hasn’t the SS questioned Soros?

Isn't New Mexico one of the states that depends on DC for about half of their day-to-day operating expenses?

Here in New Mexico we are stuck on stupid.

Our Republican Governor gets into a war of words with the candidate that eventually gets elected President. This in a state that is HUGELY dependent on federal dollars (several Air Force bases, Sandia Labs, Los Alamos Labs, etc). We have one Republican representing the state in congress.

At a time where other (smart) states are becoming business friendly and anti-illegal immigration, we are going the other direction.

Freaking geniuses in Santa Fe...

Those that support “sanctuary” laws should first read Title 8 Section 1324 of the USC. Punishable for up to 10 years PER alien.
