One summer, my NCO’s hung the snakes they killed from the eve of the barracks. There were six over five feet long. Two that touched the ground.
All my senior NCO’s carried personal firearms to kill snakes. Very much against regulations but I never made an issue of it.
It was a signal unit with big vans on the back of trucks. My active duty inspector cited my unit for safety violations where my men were sleeping on top of the vans. I showed him the snakes we’d killed. He rescinded the citation.

Well, we went out in the wind and rain this morning, she squatted, did a whole day’s worth (which I dutifully picked up and disposed of properly) and then the wind grabbed my umbrella, she escaped, ran over to a neighbor to see what treats she put out for the birds, and then she came back to our porch in her purple parka with her leash trailing.
Now, to the tune of “Rudolph” let’s all SING!
Penny the Prancing Pit-bull,
Is the perfect pet for Me!
She has a Purple parka
Wears it when she goes to pee.
She can be quite persistent,
When she’s walking for a mile.
Pulling her Patient Mommy
And she does it all with style!
Don’t I!
And to make matters worse, Ft. Lauderdale is running a BIG Ad Campaign right now (probably due to the horror of the airport terrorist) and so, several times a day, I am regaled with images of places I truly MISS. Argh!
Oh yeah! A Safety Inspector with some common sense. Rare breed...
Memories....trained there with the Seabees in January 1973...very cold. I had worked there for a week right before training started and had taught myself how to repair the kerosene heaters. I was very busy every night with people begging me to come get their heaters up and running.
And I’ll have to admit the old WWII C-Rats weren’t bad.
wh!!
Thanks, unique.
