Deion Sanders Blames ‘Reverse Racism’ for Pats WR Julian Edelman Being Under Appreciated
Breitbart ^ | January 22, 2017 | Trent Baker

Posted on 01/23/2017 3:31:31 AM PST by monkapotamus

Former NFL and MLB star Deion Sanders said on NFL Network that white Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is the victim of “reverse racism,” thus vastly overlooked as one of the better players in the league as a result...

“I’m not lying. This is real talk. Julian Edelman, just because he is a caucasian receiver, they don’t give him the credit that he deserves. He deserves so much more. This kid can flat out play. [There] hasn’t been an answer for him over the last several years. Julian Edelman moves chains, he can get deep, he works between the numbers, works outside the numbers, he can throw the football, he can can run the football — he can do it all, man.”

Imagine if a white person said that.

That what I think. Haven’t heard anyone else even brave enough to touch the subject in sports.

Well, it’s nice to hear, but I think everybody knows Edelman is a fantastic player.

When he was playing, Deon complimented Tom Waddle on being the best white wider receiver in the league.

Turns out, at the time, Waddle was the only white wide receiver in the league.

Julien was drafted in the 7th round and he was a QB in college... Pretty much every college QB who was black became either a wide out or a rusher before the early 80s.

Belichick is a genius!

IIRC, there is a story in the Moneyball book in which several white MLB scouts observed a white player consistently winning the 60 yard dash against several black players. They wouldn’t believe their “lying eyes” until they ran the players separately and used a stopwatch to time them.

Racial stereotyping comes from all directions.

I know he is a professing christian. I like him and Michael Irvin on NFL network. I know Irvin has has his problems but both seem to be good guys.

I didn’t think about that either, but maybe it was his way of softening the blow. I wish he wouldn’t have said anything about racism. He also came out and supported the police . I think Deion means well.

I think too many here are trying to over analyze Deion’s use of reverse racism. He’s just a football player who had the balls to point out that the PC NFL doesn’t give a white receiver the credit he deserves. Be content with that and stop nitpicking his use of terminology or what he should have said. Deion is largely conservative in his thinking. Whether he votes that way is an open question.

Good point, but the stereotyping can work both ways. You rarely ever see black punters and kickers in the NFL, and black quarterbacks are still uncommon enough that they can sometimes be overrated when they do make their mark in the league.

I think football pundits have always found wide receivers to be difficult to measure anyway. It's hard to separate the quality of the receiver from the quality of the quarterback he plays with, and from the type of offensive system he plays in.

I think it really has nothing to do with race. In my opinion, this dynamic explains why wide receivers who conduct themselves like clowns on and off the field usually get the most attention in the NFL, while those who just go out and do their jobs (especially on average or mediocre teams) are often underrated.

Look at Tim Brown's career numbers. I was astonished to see him among the all-time leaders in many receiving categories, considering how little attention he seemed to get during his career.

I think that criticizing the semantics only serves to distract from the main point.

DS is correct that he is not ‘a star’, but it is NOT reverse racism, it is racism. This Super Bowl will be a good one, but I got to go with Atlanta, because Robert Kraft is almost as bad in Connecticut as the name Peter Karmanos. (Cue in Brass Bonanza)... and besides, Atlanta took out my Packers.
