President Donald Trump’s “America first” inauguration speech prompted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to make an emergency conference call Friday night to his provincial and territorial counterparts.

Trudeau was reportedly trying to convince Canadian premiers that his Liberal government is prepared to meet the formidable trade challenges that a Trump presidency presents, most importantly renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

I’ll bet that Trudeau pooped his pants when he heard that Trump had canceled TPP!

This forum hardly needs to be reminded that Trump isn’t against trade deals, but rather wants trade deals that aren’t damaging to our interests. He’s not an “isolationist”.

Exactly. The media keeps pushing this idea that America First means walling us off from the rest of the world. There us nothing that Trump has ever said that suggests this interpretation. The fake news is lying.

I believe that Trump probably thinks our interests will be better served with bilateral trade agreements with friendly countries. I think it sends a better signal to our allies to tell them we value you too much to lump you in with a bunch of other countries under some trade pact.

An agreement between Canada and the United States can be tailored to our unique trade needs (as well as other needs, like defense), without having to compromise to satisfy others.

Snotty Canadians always expect a free ride.

They have no fears of attack due to the US protectorate umbrella which by necessity extends to all of Canada.

Every rich person there who gets really sick comes here to get treatment.

They import every manner of foreign immigrants and let them run loose all across our several thousand mile border.

They create more or a carbon footprint per capita (not that I care about any carbon footprint) than anywhere on earth but lecture the US on our consumption.

Screw them.

"Canada, we want to change the trade pacts and not buy so many of your goods."

"Oh, do not worry, eh. We have good solutions. I make phone calls."

As far as NAFTA goes, the U.S. does not have the same issues with Canada that it does with Mexico. If anything, our trade relations with Canada make it almost impossible to alter the terms of NAFTA very much.

Canada's largest export to the U.S. is refined petroleum, and most of that is shipped in pipelines. Once you are trading through pipelines you've taken a huge step in effectively eliminating the border between the two countries.

I believe TPP was actually dead already. This was just putting the hammer to the nail.

The biggest trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada in the last 25 years involved softwood lumber -- and it was the U.S. that imposed a tariff on Canadian lumber.

The U.S. lost that trade dispute in every trade organization that heard the case.

I love every damn thing I've ever bought that was made or grown in Canada. They've been our trading partner forever. It had a great deal to do with the growth of NYS.

The Jefferson Embargo almost killed off the American Farmer. BIG mistake....and that's what we learned from Embargoes.

Hillary was for the TPP before she was against it.

Whatever was politically expedient for her....

Should we invade Canada? It’s just the first 200 miles that would put up any resistance. We could give Quebec to the French and maybe one province to England for the Tories to live.

The oil would pay for the deal.

California could be broken into 6 states, like some want to do and we could control the water from the Canadian Rockies.

Build a wall on the Mexican border, dump the “anchor baby” amendment interpretation and we are set.
