Facebook's CEO is ruffling feathers in Hawaii with a series of lawsuits that seek to stamp out the claims of locals residents who still have an ownership right in a large tract of land he bought on the island of Kauai.
Mark Zuckerberg purchased the 700-acre parcel of rural beachfront property in 2014, but, owing to the quirks of traditional Hawaii culture and property law, he technically shares the title with hundreds of other people in the state. As the Honolulu Star Advertiser explains, the Kuleana Act of 1850 granted land ownership rights to native Hawaiiansrights that can descend to subsequent generations without the formal transfer of deeds or titles.
The upshot is that, even though none of these descendants are living on the 700 acre Kauai track, hundreds of them could still claim a right to enjoy parts of the land. In response, three companies controlled by Zuckerberg filed eight so-called "quiet title" lawsuits to extinguish those claims.

It’s a responsible move to extinguish a cultural tie to the land and I’ve been in Hawaii a lot. The indigenous ties to the land are spiritual.
Sorry, I misplaced a question mark.
Its a responsible move to extinguish a cultural tie to the land?
I know exactly where that property is and had a friend living on one of the houses about 5 years ago. There is a great beach just a quick hike. Because of Hawaiian law he CAN NOT block the beach. He’s going to see just how stubborn Kauains can be. A bunch of surfers blocked the Super-Ferry. Some natives have blocked nearly all development on the island. They aren’t going to care one whit about Zucks privacy.
Its a responsible move to extinguish a cultural tie to the land?
How does one extinguish a spiritual tie?
What is a cultural tie to the land, when people are not living there or do not even know they own it?
Multiple, contested titles, make for lots of courtroom proceedings.
There does not appear to be any question that Zuckerberg purchased the land legally from a willing seller/sellers.
I have seen thousands and thousands of acres lie fallow because the titles are unclear.
How did he buy the land without clearing it with the ancestral owners first? Did these "ancestral owners" get any proceeds from the sale?
How do you define an "ancestral owner"? Anyone of Hawaiian ancestry, or must they have lived on this particular island? For how long?
Doesn't matter, 'cause I saw an endangered snail crawling on the beach...
Natives could use these “Cultural Ties” to hold up clear title to the land. I bet that happens and that is why Zuckerberg made this move.
But extremely hypocritical.
I think this guy has a death wish.
I think this guy has a death wish.
The Descendants should SUE the Government and DEMAND They immediately SEIZE his Property using the Kelo Decision as their Authority . Promise to make it a park or some nature retreat.
He’s burnishing his Democrat credentials. You have to become a little Nero first.
I think Zuck has a death wish!
Eminent Facebook.
While he sits in some run down local clink, his rivals will cannibalize his business and expose every misdeed he was hiding through his money.
When he gets out about the time Trump's first term ends he will be bitter and angry...but to toxic to be a candidate.
Maybe he should give up on the idea of a huge private compound in Hawaii.
Nice. I mean, they always moralize us about giving money to refugees and these poor Indians, and here they come with all their donated money to sue said Indians (Hawaiians) out of oblivion.
How do all these Indians and Hawaians voting for Democrat Eminent Domain now like it, eh...
Democrats and Liberals are the evil party of Andrew Jackson and the trail of tears... let us never forget that it was not America BUT DEMONCRAPS! who need to pay reparations.
He has to visit , to go in and out of this place . Locals can be pretty imaginative , esp. these days , in dealing with those that mess with ‘sovereign’ rights .
In this case ; I wish them all the luck .
It’s time for these uber rich cyber billionaires to understand , you need to earn what you own . And coming up with a social media platform does not constitute ‘earning ‘ land right over 100’s of local residents . Screw his $$$
He can line his imu with it
He’s rich and the laws do not apply to him
Pele (volcano goddess) is not going to like him.
Perhaps she will pay him a visit and destroy his compound.
