Rick Perry: ‘I regret’ calling for the elimination of the Energy Department
Washington Times ^ | 01/19/2017 | By Ben Wolfgang

As he tries to convince the Senate to put him in charge of the Energy Department, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry will tell lawmakers Thursday that he was wrong to recommend eliminating that same department.

During his 2012 presidential campaign, Mr. Perry, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for energy secretary, advocated getting rid of the Energy Department, along with several other federal agencies. At one GOP primary debate he was unable to remember all of the departments he sought to scrap, leading to his infamous “Oops” moment.

More than four years later, Mr. Perry now is a full-throated supporter of the Energy Department and said he’s learned a great deal about the agency’s role through conversations with current Secretary Ernest Moniz and others.

“I have learned a great deal about the important work being done every day by the outstanding men and women of the DOE. I have spoken several times to Secretary Moniz and his predecessors. If confirmed, my desire is to lead this agency in a thoughtful manner, surrounding myself with expertise on the core functions of the department,” Mr. Perry will tell the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Thursday morning, according to excerpts released by the Trump transition team.

“My past statements made over five years ago about abolishing the Department of Energy do not reflect my current thinking,” the former governor will say. “In fact, after being briefed on so many of the vital functions of the Department of Energy, I regret recommending its elimination. If confirmed, I will enter this role excited and passionate about advancing the core missions of the DOE, and drawing greater attention to the vital role played by the agency and the hard working men and women who dedicate themselves in pursuit of these missions.”

Probably. But to my mind, if this is a 51/49 Senate vote decision, eff the Democrats. Endure and vote as quickly as possible. I don’t care what Democrats think or want at any time, ever.

Does he regret calling Trump a cancer on the GOP?

Can’t believe that Trump nominated this guy.

Don’t be fooled. ALL of these people have to cow-tow during the hearings. Team Trump telling me they are going to have to go easy on the exec orders long enough to get them all confirmed.

I don’t doubt for a minute that once they clear the hearings, they regret that they regretted.

At THIS point in American history, I would think standing for what I said would be more apropos than trying to back peddle.

Look Senator, I was trying to get elected, just like you in 19?? when YOU said, "blah blah blahhhh"

Of course it would never get that far after one or two completed replies like that.

Did you say, "blah blah blah" ?

"Like, blah blah blah from 19?? ... yes"

Exactly.

Cut the bureaucracy and their mechanisms for meddlingin energy markets and focus on the reason DoE was created.

Rick Perry can do that, if he’s got proper direction.

In the end, these Democrat runner up panelists only deserve lip service and then to be told to STFU by the ones really in charge of the panel. They don’t matter one bit.

What most don’t know is the sneaky b@$(@^) never backed off the HPV vaccine mandate. After supposedly calling it off, he pushed it in Texas schools. School nurses were given the authority to disburse it. Students were sent home with papers for parents to sign for kids to get the two rounds of the vaccine for FREE! Hey, it’s FREE! So, of course, many parents jumped on it. No, nothing is free. Somehow, we paid for it.

Don’t ever trust this guy. As governor, he would stick his finger up to see which way the wind was blowing. He has no convictions of his own. Don’t get me started on the Corridor or the DREAM Act or illegals or....

Texas is a great State. I should know. I live here.

So great, in fact, that not even Rick Perry or George W. before him, as governor could screw it up.

Hell, I was here when Ma Richards was guv. That was difficult. But not even Ma could screw things up.

It never fails to amaze me how few people know what the real purpose of DOE is.

If we strip away all the politically correct bullshit, we could rename it the AEC ...

“And so the walkbacks begin.”

Puleeze....Who does Perry work for? I believe his name is President-Elect Donald Trump.

Who sets policy? Why Mr Trump will. Perry will implement Trump’s policy.

Nothing has been “walked back” until you hear it from President Trump’s mouth or his press secretary.

He should applaud his former statement and tell the Democrat POSs interviewing him that his first step as Secretary will be to start dismantling the agency.

Perry is a nice guy, but not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Fold procurment of nuclear material into the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, get rid of DOE. Kinda saves a bunch of money.

We talk of “draining the swamp”, but once a newly minted, well meaning politician takes a sip of the swamp, he/she thinks it tastes sweet. I hope this is not a trend.
