UPDATE: Sheila Butt announced on Tuesday that she is withdrawing the bill. Read more about that here.
Tennessee, more than 1 million people depend on benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to put food on their tables. Rep. Shelia Butt, R-Columbia, introduced a bill that would stop people from using those benefits, know as SNAP or food stamps, to buy foods high in calories, sugar and fat.
Some people in our area think the bill is a good idea.
"Milk and food items is fine," said Alan Rogers. "That's what they're for. Just to sustain life. All this other stuff is extra stuff." Walter Little says he can see both sides.
"It's a two-way street," said Little. "It's a good idea health wise - but a lot of people don't want to be told what they should eat and what they shouldn't eat. I'm 69 years old. But I jog, I work out and I try to eat healthy. But this is my belief. And I would hate to force my ideas on someone else."
The bill says food "without any nutritional value" would be blocked. People would not be able to use their benefits for things like soda, ice cream, cookies, candy and cake.
Rep. Butt also proposes establishing a list of banned foods that would be made with help from the Department of Heath and Human Services using recommendations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
"All the public pays for food stamps and I think there ought to be rules on it," said Rogers. "There has to be. It just can't be wide open."
If the bill becomes a law, it will take effect in July.
you’re not very bright, are you?
The druggie gives the Snap card and pin number to the dealer who keeps it and gives them half it’s value in drugs. When the card is refilled by the state the druggie gets half of it’s value, in drugs, again.
Then the dealer pays a druggie to use the card and take the purchase to a restaurant or corner shop and sell it for half value.
Drug dealers and their Senators and Representatives love Snap. So do the manufacturers and the media the manufacturers advertise in.
What ever happened with Reagan’s program of distributing commodities instead of just letting them rot form age? I had a poor relative who got them and she said the butter and cheese were absolutely first quality.
Do they still do it?
These folks are eating better than I am.
I just made a dish yesterday from several cans of Mini-Ravioli that expired in April, 2016 along with a few cans of expired Lasagna. Add in some cottage cheese (sell by was 1/14), throw on a bag of Mozzarella ($1.66) and a meal for a few days is born.
I bought the Mini-Ravioli and Lasagne cans for about 68 cents each. I figure there was $8 or $9 in the total meal. Should cover several days. Already, at least 4 meals have been had and over 1/2 of it is left.
I have survived on Ramen and water. Pretty cheap and surprisingly, you don’t lose weight. Lotsa water and sodium. The ramen was 16 cents a bag at WM - $1.92 for 12 - now about $2.16. So I could make it on 32 cents per day.
Oh it wasn’t the best way to eat, LOL.
my reply was an old line from seinfeld too, silly wabbit....
LOL - OK
Thanks for the reminder!!!
Well, then. Never mind......
There are so many......
No problem.
;)
You should be part of our Seinfeld ping if you’d like more illogical references to obscure lines on threads totally unrelated.
Please delete - I misunderstood.
You know, like when Kramer thought Newman had passed on....
sure, that worx
Cup Needle Soup ,3 for $1 . Filling and nutritious.
Summary execution is likely the most effective way of stopping drug dealers.Whether they advertise on television or the streets.
Welcome aboard!!!! Sorry about that BTW.
Seinfeld ping - about nothing
Larrylucido or gamecock are our most prolific pingers
I used to watch it daily - sometime multiple times per day — now they keep cutting the episodes to fit in more commercials — it’s hard to watch.
Like when Newman slides the black Acura NSX just before eating the muffin tops. NSX scene gone from the episodes I see. :(
That’s why sometimes I put Kramer: George: etc. because the dialogue is so ridiculous, LOL.
One of the Butt sisters.
I’m not sure I’ve ever had them but I’ll try them one of these days.
Every time I see it, I’m reminded of 2004’s “The Manchurian Candidate”.
I didn’t like it at first. Now I’ve watched it several times - if you can get past the bad “music” at the Desert Storm scenes.
...especially living in what little is left of Pennsylvania's once great dairy country.
Soda I can understand but cream??? Come on, man!
;)
If the taxpayer is footing the bill then we have every right to say that non-nutitious foods can not be bought with an EBT card.
