Police say surveillance video shows the two males approach Whitener as he walked toward the store. The suspects then walked away when the theater director walked into the entrance. Once inside, Whitener immediately went to a Target employee and told them about the males, who were then asked by an off-duty officer and a security guard to leave the property. However, authorities say Whitener was approached by the two males after he left the store at about 11:05 p.m. "They made a threatening statement to [Whitener] and then beat him with the [wooden] stick and fled on foot towards the street," read a statement from Dallas police.

Well, let’s find these guys so the courts can give them their mild slap on the wrist. After all, they’re members of the protected class of criminals. It’s not like they were white or anything serious like that.
Based upon their actions the term males is more appropriate. Men would imply that these perps were human beings.
Let’s judge these two vermin by the content of their character.
Then hang them.

Also the reporters would never want to say “men”, when the assailants were only “teens.”
Even to say “male” is problematic. How do the reporters have any idea how these people, nay, beings, identify? Consider their choice of masks. Those might have been female gorilla masks.
FWIW, I think it’s because of the age of the perps is unknown. They might be “teens”.
