UP to eight people have been killed after a gunman stormed BPM festival in Mexico's popular tourist hotspot Playa Del Carmen.

Shots were fired in the early hours of the morning at the dance and music event, which attracts a whole host of DJs from across the world, including UK artists.

A gunman reportedly fired through an open window at the Blue Parrot club in Playa Del Carmen, which is a popular tourist hotspot with British and American music fans.

The popular nightclub was one of the several venues holding a closing party for the event, which featured 150 of the world's top DJs, acts and producers.

Unconfirmed reports suggest eight people, including a security guard, have been killed in the massacre. -snip-

A second shooting was reported at the Jungle, which was also holding a closing party. Scottish DJ Jackmaster, Jack Revill, pleaded with clubbers to stay inside. He tweeted: "Someone has come into the club in Playa Del Carmen and opened fire. 4-5 dead and many wounded. Stay in ur f**** (sic) hotel if you're here at BPM."

He later added: "Apparently now more shots fired at another club in the area. "This is a very very sad situation. Tryna get my head around it still. Thoughts and condolences to all affected."

BMP Festival tweeted to say all closing parties have been shut down while police investigate the bloodbath. Photos show chaotic scenes after the shooting. Festival organisers have urged revellers to stay inside. -snip-

Local reports suggest the shooting is linked to Mexico's ongoing cartel wars, but police have not yet commented on the ongoing incident. -snip-

This year marked BMP Festival's 10th anniversary. It has become one of the world's biggest dance and electronic music events.

Drug cartel deal gone bad and a revenge shoot or another form of terrorism directed at foreign tourists.

Question: Who would Mexican authorities prefer to blame, drug cartel or RoP?

Or the ROP again.

I don't think the drug cartels would tolerate Muslim fanatics in their 'hood, messing with business. They're the ones doing the head-chopping.

Very sad news.

Probably not Islam, imo, but the drug cartels are not the only heavily-armed, anti-government forces in Mexico.

Until now, the drug-related violence has stayed out of the Cancun/Playa area; instead, it has largely ruined Acapulco as a tourist destination. Theory has always been that the drug lords put their money in these Yucatan resorts and take their families there, so they have been off-limits. If this doesn’t recur, it probably won’t hurt tourism; if it does, the bottom will fall out just like it has in Acapulco.

I hope that you’re right. How safe is Cabo San Lucas?

How safe is Cabo San Lucas?

I have no idea. Mexico has scared me as a destination, plus I'm sure my husband would never go there, it's too hot and sunny. I think I'll stay in Detroit.

I have a lot of friends who go there regularly - they say it's fine. Because of Cabo's remote geographic location, it is not a part of the cartels' operations.

I'd still rather go to Hawaii. :)

If Mexico is more dangerous than Detroit, then that’s a scary country.

Mexico is corrupt, dirty, and dangerous. And they dump their worst citizens on us. Why on earth would anyone reward that behavior by spending money going there?

Of course they would. The Muslims pay off the cartels, who then pay off the policia and it’s done. La mordida is a time honored tradition of Mexican society.
