Arkansas tries to strip Gen. Lee from Martin Luther King Day

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Every third Monday in January, Arkansas state offices are closed in observance of an unlikely holiday: the shared birthdays of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Only three states commemorate both men on the same day, a practice that critics say hurts Arkansas' reputation. Now the Republican governor is reviving an effort to remove Lee from the holiday, but he faces resistance from opponents who complain the move belittles the state's Confederate heritage and from black lawmakers worried about a plan to set aside another day to honor Lee.

"I think this provides our state an opportunity to bridge divides," said Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who has vowed since early last year to make the change, which is part of his agenda for the legislative session that began last week.

Robert E. Lee was the greatest American general. He deserves to be remembered.

Why celebrate Robert Lee, who had no connection with the state. If they want to memorialize a Confederate general with a day then why not choose one from Arkansas like Patrick Cleburne or Thomas Hindman?

Release the FBI files on MLK!

If we are celebrating a holiday for this man, why must we hide the FBI Files?

“Do away with all holidays except Christmas, 4TH of July, and Veterans Day”

Why do away with Thanksgiving?

Virginia had “Lee-Jackson-King Day” for 17 years before separating them. I believe Virginia still has “Lee-Jackson” day as a state holiday the Friday before Martin Luther King day.

It's a federal holiday. Lee day was declared by the state. So if the state wants a Confederate general holiday then why not pick an Arkansas general?

Because hookers need their privacy.

Why did JFK and RFK so mistrust their brother in the saintly trio that they hacked his phone?

MLK day is a federal holiday only because the Fed forced the States to recognize it. Arizona was last to recognize it. The NFL threateded to boycott the state (no Super Bowl) unless they recognized MLK holiday.

Release the FBI reports!

That date is General Lee’s actual birthday. It’s more relevant to him than it is to Michael King, as it is General Lee’s actual birthday, and therefore he has more right to the date than does Michael King. If a date needs to be changed, it should be Michael King’s, as it has less relevance to him, unless it was chosen on purpose because it is Robert E Lee’s birthday.

“Why celebrate Robert Lee, who had no connection with the state.”

Why celebrate Christmas? Jesus never walked in Arkansas, that we know.

The reason to celebrate Robert E. Lee is because of what he did before Lincoln’s War. What he did during Lincoln’s War. And what he did after Lincoln’s War.

That just goes to remind me that the National Felons League didn’t just recently start pushing the PC agenda, they’ve been doing it for a long time.

Amen. And he was an honorable man in both his public and his private lives. Which is more than can be said for Michael King.
