Santa Rosa school board votes to protect undocumented students

The trustees overseeing Santa Rosa City Schools voted unanimously this week to declare the district a “safe haven” for immigrant families, meaning no federal immigration officers will be allowed on campus without the written approval of district Superintendent Diann Kitamura.

The move on Wednesday has been in the works since the day after the November election, said Jenni Klose, the board president, who said it was prompted by fears and anxiety generated by President-Elect Donald Trump’s campaign trail promises to build a wall between the United States and Mexico and vow to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.

“There were first-graders telling their teacher that they were afraid that if Trump were elected, they would be, or their parents would be, taken away,” Klose said. “They wondered why someone running for president hated Mexicans like them, and that anxiety has been pretty widespread.”

The Santa Rosa City Schools district, the largest in Sonoma County, is the first to vote on such a resolution, according to county Office of Education, which is considering something similar for its special and alternative education programs.

“Children need to feel safe,” said Kitamura. “We want to reassure our students and their families that they have the legal right to be in our public schools, whatever their immigration status.”

I agree. I live out here. I would love to leave, but I am tied to a gran daughter who needs some help. As soon as she is in college, we are blowing this popsicle stand.

OK as long as they realize it’s on their own dime.

State and local authority should remain well guarded from Federal usurpation. No Federal entity can leverage itself over and above a State’s constitutional protections. That said, State Legislatures entering into contracts with Federal agencies and receiving Federal monies and tax incentives, undermines that liberty and creates servitude. Take the Fed money and you just “sold the farm”, became an extension of the Fed, and gave them the right to enforce themselves into your life according to contractual agreement. Refuse the money, and you keep your liberty as a state or local government.. The State constitution becomes subverted and compromised until the money strings are cut.

Wouldn’t you say the support for illegal immigrants is directly related to the vineyards? I am guessing that most are hiring illegals to bring in the harvest.

It is a sad situation—it is lovely country and liberals and illegals are screwing it up :(

Translation:

Teachers need to feel that their sinecures ( oops! “ jobs”) are safe.

Remember! It's all about feeding the Education-Industrial Complex.

"What authority does a public school have to block a federal officer?"

None whatsoever.

It dominates NJ; Christie is the only one who stood up to them so strongly. Whatever criticisms people have of him, he certainly has the right enemies...

A simple rule change by the Administration would fix this.

Only Valid and Verified Social Security Numbers shall be used to tabulate the funding based on Daily Average Attendance Records for Public Schools.

No. Nothing to do with vineyards. In fact, most schools and liberals here dislike the vineyards. Liberals are narcissistic and need a cause. The cause of those less fortunate, for liberals, is also a cause for them to feel better than others, both those they pretend to help and those they believe they are helping them against. In reality, they do not truly desire to help anyone, only feed their ego.
