NBC's Matt Lauer says he was reduced to tears when he watched President Obama surprise Vice President Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thursday.
"I'm glad there were no cameras in my apartment yesterday because I was just sitting there weeping ... I just burst out crying when I saw that moment. It was incredible, Lauer, who recently signed a reported $20 million per year contract extension through 2018, said Friday on "Today."
The waterworks were on for Biden himself as well on Thursday when Obama shocked his vice president with the Medal of Freedom. Biden had to turn from the cameras momentarily to compose himself.
NBC Newss chief foreign affairs correspondent, Andrea Mitchell, shared the same sentiment in a report recapping the medal ceremony, saying the friendship between the two men is something rarely seen in Washington politics.
"Its a bond like we've never seen before. At times, more like a White House buddy movie than a political partnership," Mitchell observed.
"After eight years, the Bidens and Obamas forging a friendship so close they consider themselves family. ... Their friendship often reaching a fever pitch on social media," she continued.
"Biden tweeting a photo of a friendship bracelet on the Presidents birthday: 'Happy 55th, Barack! A brother to me, a best friend forever.'
After the "Today" report, guest co-host Meredith Vieira called the event so beautiful.

I expect more waterworks from these two a little under a week from now although for a completely different reason. The boo hoo girl will be working overtime on FR that day I imagine.
Matt Lauer ovulates.
He’s also a corrupt, biased POS.
Joe biden is one of few very successful politicians who made good living completely with tax payers money for his family
I have to admit, it was touching. Here was a 70 year old man who had never received an award with his name on it. Oh sure, he had a lot of “Participant”, “Attendee”, etc. awards but never a real award. But he is only half way there, he now needs to “earn” an award with his name on it.
Remember, he got the award from the two bit dictator who “awarded himself” a distinguished service award .... see Ashton Carter on the evening news awarding it to His Arrogance?
Gee, that’s odd, I didn’t cry. In fact, I didn’t even watch it. Saw a photo of Biden with his medal and was glad the Wizard of..., err, Obama, gave him one as Liberals (Hollywood included) need to let all of us know how very special they are with their little award ceremonies.
If Biden had wanted to preserve just a little of his dignity, he wouldn't have put on such a self-serving, sanctimonious, overly sentimental display.
Instead, his lugubrious performance will live on in well-deserved infamy ... like Sally Fields's "you like me, you really like me!" speech.
Yes, you are probably right about talking points.
Remember when, 10 minutes after Trump finished speaking at the RNC, the “dark” theme was airing all over the MSM? Just adding to the whole idea that the MSM is 99% “Fake News”.
Well, bless your heart, Matt. /s
will they cry when Obama gives himself the medal? Michelle? His Dog?
Nope, no bias in our media. No sir.
3 letter word .... J-o-b-s
Save your tears for your pillow wussy boy.
Betacuck.
There’s no liberal media bias. Nothing to see here.
That was the Presidential Medal of Freedom...with Oak Leaf Clusters. /s
Woop
This is like watching the crew of the Titanic cheer captain Smith for keeping the boat afloat for another hour.
My GOD these people are just nuts.
How about "Effeminate"? "Cry baby"? "Metro-sexual"? "Weenie"? Lots of names could apply to Matt Lauer in this situation!
These people are flipping unbelievable. Can everyone just stop crying for a minute? At least until Jan. 20. :-)
