A recovering alcoholic says she knew she wasnt drunk when she collided with a parked vehicle in late 2015. Sober for most of a decade, her beverage of choice had become orange juice, which she imbibed with gusto during late nights at the office.
The Midwestern attorney -- who asked to be called Sara to protect her career -- sometimes would skip a meal as she consumed up to a gallon of juice a day. And for about a year before the accident, she recalls feeling odd and that something was medically wrong.
When Sara blew just over .10 on a breathalyzer, slightly above the legal blood-alcohol limit in her state, she was arrested for drunk driving, a charge she had faced before.
The charge was quietly reduced last year after Sara was diagnosed as a likely sufferer of auto-brewery syndrome, a rare condition in which digestive tracts loaded with yeast ferment high-carbohydrate foods such as bread and sugary foods like fruit into alcohol.

Well, that’s got to be a heckuva note to think you’ve been in recovery for ten years only to discover you’ve been drunk the whole time! A gallon a day though, she must have known something wasn’t right.
I got a pickup out back with a few special modifications. It makes some real smooth moonshine. Yup, it’s an auto-brewery.
Worth remembering...”auto brewery syndrome”
a rare condition in which digestive tracts loaded with yeast ferment high-carbohydrate foods such as bread and sugary foods like fruit into alcohol...
So we’re talking a bunch of fruit and a few bags of bread.
Maybe 8 bucks? A good bottle is 25.
Hold my beer while I try this out...
A day without fermented orange juice is like a day without sunshine
That's 900 calories a day of just juice, almost half of a woman's daily calories. No, thank you.
She was still driving under the influence. (I have to remember this one)
Prison hooch.
How many calories are in a gallon of orange juice?
I’ve known some “yeasty” women in my day, but this takes the cake.
"I'm subject to auto-brewery syndrome.
( A rare condition in which digestive tracts loaded with yeast ferment high-carbohydrate foods such as bread and sugary foods like fruit into alcohol. )
About 2,000 calories in a gallon of orange juice. About the caloric equivalent of 10 beers.
Urban myth.
More than double this, look at the label. Its only 56 ounces. A gallon is 128 ounces. Shes pushing 1500-1600 calories in juice a day if she really was drinking a gallon.
It’s about as much as a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese.
I drink orange juice all the time and never even get a buzz.
Hey Phlap: Not an urban myth. I knew a transit driver who -— it was discovered— had a fold in her small intestine which formed a pocket that trapped yeast and “chyme” (pronounced “KIME”)-— the the pulpy thick fluid consisting of partly digested food that passes from the stomach to the small intestine.
She got drunk from simple carbs.
Almost lost her license and her job until that got cleared up legally, and then surgically.
BTW, a couple years after the surgery, the fold/pocket formed again. It just seems to be something her alimentary canal “does.” Needs regular monitoring.
