In battle (however you define it) even in the middle of a battle, you relieve a commander in whom you do not have confidence. More will come out, but I’m thinking the DC commander of the USANG has been a political tool.

General Mattis has no command authority. He could not order the removal/relief of this General.

That would probably be a safe bet!
I don't know anything about this guy, but his career has been mostly spent in Washington DC postings. I assume one has to be a good politician to make it to General, but I wonder if this guy made his political preferences too obvious.
