President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Defense Department, General (ret.) James Mattis told a congressional confirmation committee on Thursday that he believes that Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem, should be considered the capital of Israel.

Mattis, who in the past criticized the Jewish state over “settlements” in Judea and Samaria and warned the country was at risk of turning into an “Apartheid” state, appeared to deviate from the stated policy of the incoming Trump administration, which has indicated it plans to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

When asked Thursday by South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham what he believes Israel’s capital is, Mattis claimed the Israeli government is located in Tel Aviv.

"The capital of Israel that I go to, sir, is Tel Aviv, sir, because that's where all their government people are," Mattis said.

It is unclear whether the retired Marine general simply erred in his response, or was referring to Israel’s military establishment, which is headquartered in the Kirya complex in Tel Aviv.

Israel’s seat of government is in Jerusalem, where the Knesset, Supreme Court, and major ministries are all located.

Re : Post #11

“Israel’s capital is wherever Israel wants it to be. It’s Israel’s decision and theirs alone.” I don’t have a problem with that, I think it was a good answer... MAGA!

Humorous how people think this testimony actually matters. It’s all Kabuki theater. Trump will decide this matter. Period.

Generals are practical people. They take things the way they are, rather that as we might like them to be. I’d expect this answer from him.

I’m taking a wait-n-see approach to Mattis. I don’t completely trust him. Great general though.

Trump will sit down with Net and the decision will be made by them. We do not own Israel...just support it in every way we can.

The Ministry of Defense is in Tel-Aviv, although they have significant centers throughout Israel. The Knesset (Parliament) is in Jerusalem. So are the President and the Prime Minister. So are all of the other ministries of government.

This was no dodge. There was nothing to dodge. This was reflective of a belief that Israel should turn over the lands that it holds in Judea and Shomron and the Eastern Part of Jerusalem to a newly-formed state comprised of Palestinians who want to destroy Israel.

I didn’t ask for the help. I don’t need it. You can contort your brain into knots to convince yourself that Mattis accepts Trump’s Middle East policies, but he demonstrated that he does not. I can understand that he was selected because we need to rebuild military morale and we need someone who can face off against Iran. But Mattis is dangerous when he becomes involved wth Israel — and as Swcretary of Defense it is inevitable that he will.

He gave the PC answer, why is that surprising? People expecting the reincarnation of Patton are going to disappointed on a regular basis. Ask the Haditha Marines.

This is why he isn't nominated for SOS.

True, but also note that Generals don't get to their rank unless they are good politicians. At least not since Patton and MacArthur.

“e said that he was going with the current government designation and any change would be handled by the Secretary of State. Good answer.”

It is the longstanding policy of the USA that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Trump is just the first president with the balls to put our embassy there.

He has a lot going for him, but he is pro-Palestinian, and pro-overthrowing Assad. As a military guy he’s pretty good, as a policy maker, he’s nothing special.

It’s fine with me if our embassy is moved to Jerusalem.

Maybe this is obvious and known to everyone but me, but where are Israel’s government buildings located: the Knesset, the PM’s residence, and the offices and buildings normally located in a nation’s capital.

Are those things in Jerusalem?

Senator Graham pressed Mattis further, asking him whether he recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. "Sir, right now I stick with the US policy," said Mattis, without elaborating further. When asked by Graham whether he would “support moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” Mattis answered merely that he would leave the decision to the State Department. "I would defer to the nominee of Secretary of State on that, sir."

That looks to me like a very carefully crafted answer.
