Senate committee approves waiver allowing Mattis to be defense secretary

The Senate Armed Services Committee passed the waiver on Thursday that will allow retired Gen. James Mattis to serve as defense secretary so soon after leaving the Marine Corps, sending it to the full Senate for approval.

The vote was 24-3. Democratic Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren all voted against the waiver.

The committee approved the exemption following a wide-ranging confirmation hearing where Mattis fielded questions about threats facing the country, acquisition programs and how his time in uniform will affect his role as the department's top civilian.

The law requires an officer to be out of uniform for seven years before stepping into the civilian defense secretary role. Mattis retired from the Marine Corps in 2013 after more than 40 years of service, meaning Congress will need to approve an exemption to the law for him to serve.

I loved your post!

When I was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC), we had our own motto, “Peace is our profession, mass destruction is our specialty”.

"I think it’s actually the other way around. A liberal NYC radio host suggested that anyone who goes by the nickname “Mad Dog” is all bark and no bite."

The only hitch in that giddy up is the small detail about the troops under him and his office corps name him, he doesn't get to choose it himself.

War is not the answer.
The unconditional surrender of your enemy is the answer.

Twenty-seven Senators of a 100 total on a single committee is ridiculous. There must be a lot of bacon to be brought home as well as lots of TV face time on the Armed Services Committee. I wonder how many would be on it if it were reserved for Veterans.

Why was anti-Trump Arnold Punaro sitting behind Mattis today?

Blumenthal - my state’s idiot. How can you not know to not stand on the yellow line at the train station??

(He was doing a photo op on trains in his home state and came really close to being hit by one, would have been messy if he was 3 inches further to his left!!)

Ex Post Facto is after the fact; this waiver should be approved by the Senate before the SASC confirms GEN Mattis.

Just amazing as President Trump builds up a War Cabinet, in contemplation of never going to war, and has done so almost completely without impediment because the Democrat/Media have decided to indulge in full Trump Derangement Syndrome.

I knew President Trump would win, just never knew it would be this good.

You are of course quite correct. I had a brain cramp, for which I humbly apologize. I meant to write Bill of Attainder, which I thought was a law only affecting one person, but I see now that it refers to a legislative act declaring a particular person guilty of a crime (usually treason).

I know -- Let's keep track of how many times Faux-ca-hontas is on the losing side of the vote. Because it's obvious she thinks that by being really, really, really, really tough on Republicans she'll become the "new" Hillary Clinton just in time for 2020.

If that's true, then Liar-Watha better get used to losing!

Trump Pentagon likely to abandon social experiments for core mission under Mattis, say experts

I sure hope he lives up to his billing (and his nickname).

The military has been homosexualized, feminized, cut, sequestered, demoralized, and abused.

People on that House committee have many hours of Mattis’Senate testimony that they could watch. Instead they want their time on TV. Our legislators are mostly glib people who are much better with bloviating than they are with knowledge or strategic thinking. They are demonstrating this at the hearings.

She foolishly equates a big mouth with strength. She and Cory Booker better stay away from each other. They both plan on being our next president. Not much chance of that, especially since they both made such fools of themselves in these hearings, she brow-beating Ben Carson with inane questions, and Booker taking back all the praise he heaped on Sessions a year ago, to beat up on his own Senate colleague.
