Reservoirs are a major source of global greenhouse gases, scientists say
WA Po ^ | September 28, 2016 | Chris Mooney

Countries around the world are trying to get their greenhouse gas emissions under control — to see them inch down, percentage point by percentage point, from where they stood earlier in the century. If everybody gets on board, and shaves off enough of those percentage points, we just might be able to get on a trajectory to keep the world from warming more than 2 degrees Celsius above the temperature where it stood prior to industrialization.

But if a new study is correct, there’s a big problem: There might be more greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere than we thought. That would mean an even larger need to cut.

The new paper, slated to be published next week in BioScience, confirms a significant volume of greenhouse gas emissions coming from a little-considered place: Man-made reservoirs, held behind some 1 million dams around the world and created for the purposes of electricity generation, irrigation, and other human needs. In the study, 10 authors from U.S., Canadian, Chinese, Brazilian, and Dutch universities and institutions have synthesized a considerable body of prior research on the subject to conclude that these reservoirs may be emitting just shy of a gigaton, or billion tons, of annual carbon dioxide equivalents. That would mean they contributed 1.3 percent of the global total.

Moreover, the emissions are largely in the form of methane, a greenhouse gas with a relatively short life in the atmosphere but a very strong short-term warming effect. Scientists are increasingly finding that although we have begun to curb some emissions of carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas, we are still thwarted by methane, which comes from a diversity of sources that range from oil and gas operations to cows.

Not a recent "news" story, but didn't see it posted and seems so nutty I couldn't resist..

This is the real lefty bugaboo: dams. They hate dams.

First they want to take away your cars. Then they want to take away your houses. Then they want to take away your meat. Now they want to take away your potable water.

Noticing a pattern yet?

So now the whole nation must go into a drought because all the reservoirs must be drained so we can save the planet?

Liberals need to read the Bilble and particular the book of Revelation. It makes it clear God will destroy the Earth and remake it to how He originally intended it to be where all those who accepted Christ will dwell forever.

So libs, it’s not global warming that will destroy this planet. it’s God Himself. Good luck trying to stop Him!

My standard reply to glowbull warming these days:

So far in 2017, sun has been 90% blank (1 day of 11 had a small spot, today another small spot appeared). Folks, we are headed for at least a Dalton Minimum, and as we get further into it, possibly a Maunder Minimum. I hope we call this new one the ManBearPig Minimum. It's gonna get cold, and we will need to burn TONS of stuff to keep warm.

The greenhouse gas theory is all hot air.

The source of all heat on earth, the Sun, is responsible for any variations in temperature.

Oceans, the great lakes, the inland seas, all good.

Ponds, damn controlled flows... bad.

I guess the marsh and wetlands folks are in for a rude awakening.

“I guess the marsh and wetlands folks are in for a rude awakening.”

And the EnviroWeenies are in for a rude awakening when the ‘Ducks Unlimited’ crowd finds out what the end game is. They are a HUGE force to be reckoned with in our state, alone!

Don’t you TOUCH our wetlands. :)

I read the CEO, President, Vice President and such start of year remarks today. Hold on, I’m getting there. All they had to say I have heard and seen before in some form in the last 40 years and at least 5 business cycles in the oil and gas business.

This is another kind of cycle, a weather cycle, perhaps a deeper one than in times past but yes, the sun says we are headed for colder times ahead. I recall heavy snows and cold here in Oklahoma and Missouri in the 50s, 60s and lingering snow in the late 70s followed by some longetimes of warm winters. I also remember roses for Thanksgiving some years. This year though summer lingered for two months followed by bitter cold and within days balmy warm days. Just another year here in Oklahoma where variety is the spice of life.

Cycles just continue. Wash, rinse and repeat and still someone can find crisis in each becuase the duration of the cycle is long compared to a lifetime though very short comapred to a continuium.

210s have always been great airplanes.

They want to make human civilization as we know it impossible, in order to save human civilization as we know it?

Uh huh. Right.
