Reports: Trump national security pick Monica Crowley plagiarized huge sections of her Ph.D thesis

Monica Crowley, President-elect Trump's pick for senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council, appears to have plagiarized numerous sections of her Ph.D. thesis, according to investigations by CNN and Politico.

Politico, in a report published Monday, identified more than a dozen instances of plagiarism in Crowley's Columbia University thesis, "Clearer Than Truth: The Evolution of American Policy Toward the People’s Republic of China Under Truman and Nixon."

On Thursday, CNN's KFile followed up on Politico's report, revealing 40 additional instances of plagiarism in Crowley's thesis, which was submitted in 2000. Her dissertation apparently lifted from scholarly works, the Associated Press, and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger.

Crowley has not responded to requests for comment about the newest investigations into her thesis. She came under fire earlier this week after CNN's KFile revealed she had apparently plagiarized at least 50 sections of her 2012 book, "What The (Bleep) Just Happened?"

This is what it says on page 168 of Crowley's Ph.D. thesis, which can be accessed via the academic database ProQuest:

Mueller found a "rally in support at the beginning of the war and high levels of public support into 1966. By mid-1966, however, support had declined in the wake of such events as infighting among the South Vietnamese and the emergence of vocal criticism of the war during the Fulbright hearings in early 1966. By this time, the public had also come to see that the war would not be over quickly but was instead likely to be a “long, bloody affair.”

The material was copied verbatim from Eric V. Larson's "Casualties and Consensus: The Historical Role of Casualties in Domestic Support for U.S. Military Operations," according to CNN:

That is the truth and the only point that should be made. We don’t excuse Crowley. We are saddened. But what about all the lefties who plagiarized? Why do you in the lying mainstream gloss over those cheats?

Did she plagarize intentionally or unintentionally?

I publish nothing, because I never know if it’s mine or I read it 10 years ago. I have something close to or similar to eidetic memory. If I read something today it may show up verbatim in something I write 3 or 4 or even 10 years from now; and I do not remember where it came from or even that I read it. In a shorter time period, I can picture it in my mind and just read it like I had a book open in front of me.

The way that sentence “should have” been written is Larson (put year in between parentheses) suggests/argues/contends/indicates/etc. that Mueller............. If something in the paragraph is representing to be a direct quote, then that statement should be put inside double quotation marks”

If she did that, we would not be having this problem. On the other hand, one wonders what her Dissertation Director and committee were doing. All of this should have been cleaned up during her defense and before it went to the Graduate School at Columbia

I’ve heard of PHDs being revoked because they went back and ran dissertations through software that cross-referenced other sources and flagged them.

I don’t really care one way or another, but there was always something about Monica Crowley’s patronizing, condescending pattern of speech on the radio that turned me off.

She cited the source, she mentioned the source right before the quote.

You mean to tell me that the treasonous Democrat/RINO/Socialist politicians lied to us ?

I’m no fan of Booker, but that’s news to me.

“There are quote marks, ...”

If you look at the article, I think it’s clear that Business Insider added quote marks. They do it for both the original quotes (from other works) and what Crowley put in her dissertation. Notice both sets of passages have quote marks when clearly the original passages would not have had them. Thus, all of the quote marks were added by Business Insider precisely to show that they are particular passages in question.

Well the question is, is any of this true or fake news? If she did use anything, was it footnoted?
Until I see confirmed, authentic accounts, call me very skeptical. This kind of info, if true, would have been vetted a long time ago surely.

Did the Russians hack her thesis to influence the PHD advisors?

Not only that, but after the 2012 debate, Mitt Romney had Russian hookers pee on Crowley's bed in revenge for the "let's go to the tape, Candy" incident.

I don't think Michelle Obama's thesis is hidden from public view. Christopher Hitchens wrote a column about it some years ago, and his description of it was a quote for the ages:

To describe it as hard to read would be a mistake; the thesis cannot be "read" at all, in the strict sense of the verb. This is because it wasn't written in any known language."

LMAO.

His dad was a preacher who was crazy about Martin Luther because of a trip he took to Europe.

his father did in fact legally change his own name to Martin Luther and instructed his congregation to call his son also be Martin Luther King jr.

"academic database ProQuest"

Does this online tool display footnotes properly?

She may have actually cited the quotes and excerpts used in her thesis, which is entirely acceptable.

Replication of entire paragraphs with neither quote marks nor attribution certainly looks like plagiarism to me.

Have you actually seen these entire paragraphs, or are you going on what the opinions in the article ?

How is quoting another work and attributing it plagiarism?

I think you have to be a Marxist loving liberal to understand that kind of thinking.

CNN and Pollutico must be subjected to an extreme anal cavity search before we believe them. As of now I dismiss this story.
