In its ruling the court judged that Basel authorities did not violate their right to freedom of religion by insisting their daughters attend the compulsory lessons.
It accepted that the authorities' refusal to exempt the girls interfered with their freedom of religion. But the interference, it said, was justified by the need to protect the children from social exclusion.
School plays "a special role in the process of social integration, particularly where children of foreign origin were concerned," said the court.
Swimming lessons are "not just to learn to swim, but above all to take part in that activity with all the other pupils", it added.

Nobody should want to live anywhere that government makes its ideas of child socialization trump the conscience of the parents.

If swimming is part of the curriculum, then the children should be there. If the 7th century savages who want their daughters to live life with their heads in a cloth sack don’t like it, then they should leave, preferably returning to the middle eastern garbage pit from whence they came.

There is also the safety aspect. Not knowing how to swim can get you killed. Kids should be taught how to swim, and if swimming is in the school curriculum, then that should be that.
AND Muslim girls will need to be required to take part in regular gym activities, using the standard gym attire of shorts and t-shirt, WITHOUT any additional scarves, leotards, etc.
