NY Governor shutting down successful nuclear power plant because… it’s New York [Indian Point]
Hot Air ^ | January 9, 2017 | Jazz Shaw

While there had been rumors swirling for a while, I was still highly disappointed when I saw a tweet coming from the office of New York’s Governor this morning proclaiming his “victory” in moving to close the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

After that last big East Coast blackout, the pubbie governor of NYS at the time wanted to install around 18 emergency gas-fired turbine generators in NYC, in different neighborhoods.

The NIMBY, well, Neighborhood, crowd did what they do best.

FERC needs to stop regulating inter-state energy prices, then we’ll see stupid political moves like this disappear.

The US and Canada are in a protracted dispute over their border. And it all comes down to lobsters

Are you knowledgeable if HQ can supply what is taken out by closing IP?

There’s a lot of power to make up and the line losses from a more remote source make it even more demanding.

Presumably, all these considerations have been studied.

But assuming you are correct, one thing is of interest, the tax revenues to the state will be shifted to HQ so it seems an import tax is the only way to account for that loss. I would not be surprised at all if prices of power go up substantially.

Power prices in the NE are already obscenely high.

Entergy is the owner and operator of Indian Point.

Are these plants approaching end-of-life / decommissioning?

If they aren’t there already, Hydro Quebec will become the largest source of electricity for those areas in the near future.

You can’t just reverse a decision like that on a dime. I believe they’re making this decision now because it’s time to go through their recertification process with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. If they reverse the decision after he’s out of office it may not leave enough time to get all the paperwork done.

More likely Ontario Hydro (Ironically 56+% of Ontario hydro’s power is from nuclear generation)

Not IPEC. The limiting factor in nuclear plant life is embrittlement of the pressure vessel. Both IP units do not show that this is a factor at this point.

Palisades in Michigan has reported some issues with embrittlement but I haven't seen the numbers so I'm not sure.

The fact is that Entergy is throwing in the towel on its merchant power plants. When the states start harassing them it makes the decision all the easier. It happened in Vermont with Vermont Yankee. There the governor, Shumlin (Scumlin) harassed the plant with frivolous lawsuits and targeted tax increases. Cuomo has made putting IPEC's head on his trophy wall a priority, just like Mario Cuomo did with Shoreham. I hope they have power outages out the wazoo and freeze in the dark.

I seem to recall reading the Indian point Nuclear plant is actually on a fault line, one they did not know existed when they built it.

http://www.treehugger.com/natural-sciences/new-seismic-fault-discovered-one-mile-from-indian-point-nuclear-power-plant.html

If true for that reason alone it is likely a good idea to close it at some point.

It is also right next to Camp Smith, which is supposed to be one of the main collection point/operation points if a disaster occurs at New York city. So if a earthquake occurs, you would not only have a nuclear issue possibly like Fukijima, but the base that is supposed to be one of the primary response points knocked pout as well.

It pains me to say this, but I agree. Nuclear power plants need to be shut down. Build more natural gas plants if need be, but Nuclear power plants are not safe.

Chernobyl/Fukishima. These two accidents are all the evidence one needs.

The whole problem with that is there is not enough natural gas pipeline capacity in the Northeast. Attempts to build more pipelines have been stymied by NIMBYs.

Nuclear power plants are not safe.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

So, what is your degree in, that you lecture us on the safety of nuclear plants?

"power outages out the wazoo and freeze in the dark."

Sounds like another chapter in the economic suicide of New York - especially if they are going to count on Justin Trudeau's water wheels for power.
