Schumer Prepared to Hold Supreme Court Seat Open
Roll Call ^ | Jan 3, 2017 | Bridget Bowman

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer is preparing to block President-elect Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee if he or she is not in the “mainstream.”

“It’s hard for me to imagine a nominee that Donald Trump would choose that would get Republican support that we could support,” the New York Democrat told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Tuesday night.

Asked if he would do his best to hold the seat open, Schumer responded, “Absolutely.”

Well, Chucky, based on the election results, and looking at the votes by county, it looks to me like a Trump nominee WILL be “in the mainstream”. Sorry you lost.

I thought he was going to take advantage of the window of darkness during the solar eclipse to seize control of the Senate and confirm Merrick Garland.

Kagan and Sotomayor

I'd like to see these two impeached. Or tossed because Obama wasn't legitimate. That'd be awesome.

“mainstream” = “not a big fan of constitution”...which is somewhat ironic given the job description.

The DUmmies were sure this was going to happen :)

Now they’re sure Chuck can delay for 2 years, and they’ll win back the senate. Of course they were also sure HRC would win, and the rats would control congress by now.

Just who does Chuck Schumer think he is - Ted Kennedy? The shameful treatment given to Robert Bork should never have been tolerated in the first place, but once Schumer thinks he has a possible way to flay a candidate, he is making noises like he will follow through.

Nobody will be “mainstream” enough for Upchuck Schumer.

But if you are going to take a shot at the king, Schumer, you had better not miss. This is The Donald, and he has already taken your measure.

Trump announced his list of nominees during the campaign, ran on the issue, and now has a mandate for his SCOTUS selection.

Someone needs to cut Chuckies nads off. Now.

Where are the calls for bipartisanship?

If the roles were reversed, the lib media would be calling for bipartisanship nonstop.

Since it is the Democrats......crickets.

He[Trump] is not the ordinary Republican that Schumer is used to. He is used to the Republicans that soil their trousers at the thought of having to confront a Democrat. Donald is not that type of Republican. When trouble raises its ugly head, Donald Trump runs toward it, not away from it.

“...the GOP minority never had the guts to oppose a Dem nominee anyways.”

Very good point. I don’t remember it ever happening. Republicans, such as Senator Hatch, usually go to bat for such appointees.

Technically a simple majority (51 votes) is all that is needed for confirmation, however, 60 votes are needed for a ‘cloture’ vote to override a filibuster and get a stalled nomination to a vote...So if a vote comes up without a filibuster attempt then all that is needed is 51 votes...

In order for Schumer to approve, the appointee would have to be slightly to the left of Fidel...

Schumer.. so full of hot air and bluster.

Once Trump gets rolling after inauguration Schumer will become just another LIBERAL voice in the wind.

Reminder:

As many have pointed out, there is no nuke option for SCOTUS without a rule change that Reid never did.

But the real issue is value. SCOTUS justices have a habit of changing their stripes once on the court. Does it make sense to destroy the filibuster when you can’t be sure you get anyting of value in return?
