BOSTON (AP) -- As marijuana shops sprout in states that have legalized the drug, they face a critical stumbling block - lack of access to the kind of routine banking services other businesses take for granted.
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, is leading an effort to make sure vendors working with legal marijuana businesses, from chemists who test marijuana for harmful substances to firms that provide security, don't have their banking services taken away.
It's part of a wider effort by Warren and others to bring the burgeoning $7 billion marijuana industry in from a fiscal limbo she said forces many shops to rely solely on cash, making them tempting targets for criminals. . .

Did I only dream that the Republicans control both houses of Congress and we have a Republican President.
Just by what magic does she think she will get this passed?
Maybe there are a few Republicans with enough respect for the 10thh amendment to see this through. Probably will be overwhelmed by the authoritarian wing who care more about the reins of power than any principles, but worth a shot.
“Just by what magic does she think she will get this passed?”
Let her worry about that...she’s the witch! /s;)
Modification of federal bankruptcy law, especially liquidation, required. No wind up process available in federal courts, industry stays stunted.
Just trying to keep Dim voters stoned...
I agree it is a state issue.
But this is now politic 101. Why give a Democrat something for their supporters. It is a lose - lose situation for the Republicans.
If this was so important, why didn’t they do something when they were in charge.
I hope she does. She's on the right side of the issue.
Democrats like to keep the rubes on welfare and stoned so they will vote the right way.
Yep. Absolutely zero reason a legal business should not be able to access banking services.
Makes Marijuana dispensaries huge targets for robbery.
John Dillinger would be robbing them today, and not banks.
Republicans should ignore her and marginalize her every time she opens her mouth or proposes anything.
Squaw smok’em piece pipe ...
No doubt, she’ll want to extend this same protection to gun manufacturers and dealers...right?
It's already happening in Colorado. Dispensaries are sitting on mountains of cash that they have to jump through hoops to do something with.
Honestly, I don't care if they have a (D) or an (R) after their name. If they're right, they're right and if they're wrong, they're wrong. Fauxcahontas is right on this issue. The GOP ought to get right on it as well.
Yeah—about a $40 piece of crack.
Marijuana is a controlled substance under federal law.
Squaw just want piece of the wampum.
“Marijuana is a controlled substance under federal law.”
How come we had to have a constitutional amendment to prohibit alcoholic beverages, but not for this?
If Federal Banking laws are modified to allow banks to legally take money from businesses that sell pot is this the straw that breaks the camel's back that is the Federal war on weed?
This is going to get interesting.
