Two weeks ago I published an open letter here to a long-time, long-distance friend after I learned she had voted for Donald Trump. I stated that I realized I never really knew her, that I couldn’t fall back on the thought that she lived in the Rust Belt and experienced “economic anxiety” (she doesn’t, and surely isn’t) and that I’m just being honest when I say we can no longer be friends.
There was a lot of response on social media and elsewhere, most of it positive, much of it from people in far more difficult situations ― people who opposed Trump and were struggling with relationships they’ve had with parents, siblings, children or closer friends who voted for Trump. Many expressed how the letter articulated thoughts similar to their own, no matter how differently (or similarly) they may navigate this in their own lives.

I’ve got a couple friends that could not be more political opposite than me. We have been best friends for years. One is a Bernie supporter the other actually likes Hillary Clinton (okay, he’s a total idiot).
All of us would drop what we are doing in an instant if we got a call one of us needed help. And we have really heated political conversations.
It is dangerous what this guy is saying. Look in history and see the horrible things that have come as a result of “I can’t be friends with you because your support the other candidate.” Really horrible, terrible things.
That’s OK, Snowflake... I shit-canned a Hillary & a Johnson supported when they persisted in coming unglued toward Trump-supporters on social media.
Liberals always pull these types of stunts, because they know we won’t retaliate in kind.
But maybe we should. Let’s see how long they survive when the people who grow, build and service the infrastructure and systems that allow them to prosper stop interacting with them.
It would be fun to watch the journalists, college professors, community agitators, and other assorted leaches try to keep themselves alive without the productive class to carry them.

Not just applicable to friends, but if one has relatives who are like this - you never talk to them again even on their death bed.
