Planned Parenthood became a frequent talking point during the election. The additional attention now appears to be responsible for a skyrocketing number of donations.
"Somebody stopped in yesterday, downstairs, a man, and he had nine checks of $45 each, all in the name of Mike Pence," Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota President and CEO Sarah Stoesz said. She's never seen anything like it.
"Our donations are up about 300 percent over a typical year," Stoesz said. "Every time there is any kind of attack on Planned Parenthood, of any broad scale, there has been an outpouring of support. Every single time. This time, however, it's just been extraordinary."
Jon Pratt, executive director of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, said, generally speaking, donations to various groups do tend to spike after big national events, especially tragedies. But this, he said, is different.
Asked if the 300 percent increase surprised him, Pratt replied, "That's huge."
Stoesz said the extra donations mean they can guarantee they'll be able to keep their doors open regardless of what happens in Washington.
"I had no idea that this was going to be quite this way," she said.
Stoesz added that a large number of the post-election donations have come from first time donors who are also under 30.
