It is more or less an established historical fact that the word Korea derived from “Koryo.” They suspect that the name came to be known to the Western world via Arab traders.

The name comes from one of the Korean dynasties, Goryeo. They were succeeded by the Joseon Dynasty, I think around 1400, which was the last dynasty until the Japanese invaded and took over and annexed Korea in the early 1900s.
