The first series I noticed her in was “Air City” in 2007, my wife watches all of the K Dramas. Her big hit was “Winter Sonata” in 2002.

Especially when she was younger, to me she looked more like she was aristocratic Chinese rather than Korean—I would always would say to my wife, “ooh, that pretty Chinese girl is on again.” Anyway, it’s her lips and nose that make her look Chinese, she is kind of exotic looking for Korean if that makes sense. Anyway, she’s also in Chinese productions and they dub her voice in Chinese.

She used to be super popular in Korea and still is; I remember one time taking a cab in Seoul and the cabbie had a key ring fob with her face on it as well as a medallion on his dashboard, which made me laugh.

The last series I watched some of was “Twenty Again.” She’s getting older, but still very pretty.

I was in Helsinki (I think) checking into a hotel with my crew and a Korean Air crew came in. They were impeccable and all looked like supermodels and carried themselves like royalty. We were in absolute awe.

It is more or less an established historical fact that the word Korea derived from “Koryo.

The name comes from one of the Korean dynasties, Goryeo. They were succeeded by the Joseon Dynasty, I think around 1400, which was the last dynasty until the Japanese invaded and took over and annexed Korea in the early 1900s.

Air Koryo flight uniforms resemble those of the Soviet Aeroflot airline from a half century ago.

In those days Aeroflot stewardesses were chosen for their homeliness rather than beauty as being less likely to defect to the West. When Aeroflot inaugurated direct jet service to New York in 1970, their stews were real barkers.

In many respects, N. Korea is still stuck in 50’s.
The elite who could go overseas must face a great cultural disconnect to the rest of the world. It could be depressing, but they can't find a way out of it, either. Perks they enjoy come from being part of ruling elite, which cannot survive if Kim regime is toppled.
