The New York Police Department is allowing Sikh officers to wear full turbans in place of the traditional police cap and grow beards up to a half-inch long as required by their religion. NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill announced the change in policy Wednesday following a graduation ceremony for new recruits surrounded by officers wearing navy blue turbans kept in place with police brass, CNN reported. “We want to make the NYPD as diverse as possible, and I think this is going to go a long way to help us with that,” O’Neill said. “It’s a major change in our uniform policy, so we had to go about it carefully. And now I have the opportunity to make the change, and I thought it was about time that we did that.” O’Neill said the NYPD has about 160 Sikh officers.

I assure you they are quite tranquil about the risks, whether it be an increased conspicuity to jihadis, the chance of being mistaken for a jihadi by a redneck yokel, or the inability to wear a helmet or gas mask properly. Their bravery and loyalty have earned them a lot of slack on their religious garb, in my view. If all immigrants were Sikhs we'd have essentially no trouble at all with immigration.
Do you know the main reason the turban is so sacred to them? They WANT to stand out in a crowd, because the principles of their faith require them to protect the weak and downtrodden. A woman who is being attacked or stalked can run to a Sikh and beg for his protection, and his faith requires him to defend her even if it costs him his own life.
Maybe he remembers Air India flights 182 and 301. It was the deadliest terror attack involving airplanes outside of 9/11. Sikhs, not Muslims were the perpetrators.
