The New York Police Department is allowing Sikh officers to wear full turbans in place of the traditional police cap and grow beards up to a half-inch long as required by their religion. NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill announced the change in policy Wednesday following a graduation ceremony for new recruits surrounded by officers wearing navy blue turbans kept in place with police brass, CNN reported. “We want to make the NYPD as diverse as possible, and I think this is going to go a long way to help us with that,” O’Neill said. “It’s a major change in our uniform policy, so we had to go about it carefully. And now I have the opportunity to make the change, and I thought it was about time that we did that.” O’Neill said the NYPD has about 160 Sikh officers.

Just dandy that the NYPD accepts beards and turbans. But the public won’t.
The small knife they carry is to show that they will defend ALL religions.It’s one of the basic tenants of their faith.Sikhs don’t cut their hair because they believe doing so would be against God’s intent.
Yes, it is an issue. If I am approached by someone in a turban, I do not perceive that I am interacting with a police officer.
Like everyone else, Sikhs need to decide if they are a cop or soldier and follow uniform standards.

Not necessary in open carry states such as here in Michigan.
Approx. 2 years ago I encountered a Sikh gentleman at my local Meijer store who was dressed in his customary long white bathrobe and turban on his head. Even tho he was about 6'4" tall, what was most noticeable about him was the black belt he was wearing that carried a Sig P-226 on his hip............LOL!
I know that for a fact since I talked to him and thanked him for having the guts to open carry where folks here very seldom do..............

Ultimately, that’s exactly what this is all about. Catering to every minority while shafting the majority.
Sikhs, being from India are considered “Asian” by Federal race standards. Therefore, it is highly likely they are given “Affirmative Action” for employment over whites in many Government jobs.
Separation of State and Churchh....but, of course.
Separation of State and Mosque, Temple or Gurdwara - of course not.
