The United States on Thursday expelled 35 Russian diplomats and closed two Russian compounds in New York and Maryland in response to a campaign of harassment by Russia against American diplomats in Moscow, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday.

The U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters the Russian diplomats would be given 72 hours to leave the United States. Access to the two compounds will be denied to all Russian officials as of noon on Friday, the official added.

"These actions were taken to respond to Russian harassment of American diplomats and actions by the diplomats that we have assessed to be not consistent with diplomatic practice," the official told Reuters.

American diplomats have been attacked in Russia by FSB agents. Probably some people don’t care, but it’s true and an ongoing problem. Possibly they’ll stop doing it when Trump is sworn in to office.

That is par for the course for US diplomats in Communist countries for many decades. We do a little payback, but no matter who is in office, the harassment of US diplomats in Russia and China, to name just two countries, will continue. It is how the game is played.

Don’t know why the long gap between...

The long gap is the latest the swearing in can take place. I would have it done on the second Tuesday of the November with parties in January.

“Why wait till now?”

He wants to conflate it with the “hacking” thing. It’s political obfuscation for the stupid.

He should have done this in July. It’s righteous retaliation for what the Russians have been doing. As to whether the Russian actions were retaliation for something we did I haven’t a clue.

Ideally, we would reveal all of Putin’s covert bank accounts. The Russian people deserve to know how much of their wealth president for life Putin has stolen from them, and this would go a long way in exposing his bunk.

Three weeks is 21 days. He has thrown two these last 7 days (actually more than 2 if one considers the Nationalization of lands which do not belong to him). So on average of three weeks we have 21 more episodes of tantrum, low IQ, or treason, to be experienced. LOCK HIM UP!

Yes. Looks like he's going full scorched-earth policy...

I wonder if Obama's hoping to provoke some "state of emergency" that would justify martial law, putting off the inauguration... I mean... that's the exact sort of thing Lefties would always predict George W. Bush was going to do, and I'd laugh at them, but... as others have pointed out, they always accuse US of what THEY are actually guilty of. Best defense is a good offense and all that. And it's really impossible for me to parse what he's doing.

I mean... we all know damn good and well the Russian had nothing to do with the DNC leaks, and this "let's just pretend they did and act on it" business really looks... mental.

No doubt. Putin is a thug and totally corrupt. The only issue in releasing such information is the possible repercussions for us. The fact that he has the foreign accounts has been reported for years, but without the kind of specificity you suggest.

One wonders what kind of embarrassing information the Russians may have on Obama and the Clintons.

I’m not buying all of those the “beating” stories, given the number of snowflakes like “James Blonde” hired by the Obama State Department and intelligence agencies

seriously, did this guy get his spycraft kit from Toys R Us?

If the FSB “beat” our “diplomats” in 2013 and 2014- where were Kerry and Clinton and why is Obama acting only now?

I'm all in favor of a one time swearing out ceremony for Golf-One and his crime family. Walk them out of the White to the Greyhound Bus Station, carrying their own bags for a change.

Tickets should be provided to school kids having suffered from the Golf-beards food program. Have them line the march route to throw her lunches back to her.
