President Obama on Tuesday created new national monuments in a sacred tribal site in southeastern Utah and in a swath of Nevada desert, after years of political fights over the fate of the sites.
The designations further cement Obamas environmental legacy as one of the most consequential and contentious in presidential history. He now has invoked his executive power to create national monuments 29 times during his tenure, establishing or expanding protections for more than 550 million acres of federal lands and waters.
Environmental groups have praised the conservation efforts, but critics say they amount to a federal land grab. Some worry that the new designations could fuel another armed protest by anti-government forces inspired by the Cliven Bundy family, such as the takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon this year.

550 million acres, all by executive fiat. It is good to be king.
Per the chart, Bush 43 was also profligate, with Jimmy Carter third. This is a power that needs to be reined in.
I would guess that most of the land pre-empted in this way over the years has been Forest Service or BLM lands that are being withdrawn from regular management systems.

Yes, Fly...Infuriating is an understatement. It’s a total abuse of presidential power but of course it’s without a doubt the reason Barky 0bama did it, he should be horsewhipped.

What do US citizens get in return for the loss of productive use of this land?

I remember when Clinton’s national monument designation blocked clean coal mining plan because it helped Indonesia clean coal mining exports. Guess who got richer?

90% of this land should be released back to the states.

Abuse of Presidential power? Maybe my copy doesn’t have all the penumbras yours contains? /s
Good luck ‘reigning-in’. Like SS, and the rest, The People (on both sides) have no issue(s) w/ any abuse they deem ‘good’ (or benefit them directly)....until that ‘wetland’ appears in their backyard (day late\$ short).

No, ALL of this land should be released back to the states. I want the National Park System eliminated. It’s the only way to control the Feral Gov’t.

I have missed most of Nevada but been all over Utah from I-70 south to Arizona. The land is so vast and empty that to designate it this way seems really redundant. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt anything, for the land is wide open to anyone who should want to traverse it. The petroglyphs and such are already protected by law. I am enough of a conservationist to not object to this protection, but in reality the whole point was to keep energy development out of the Bears Ears tract. This is an anti-energy action, not a conservation action. Do not be deceived.

Traverse it you still can, but what if you wanted to actually live there? They e locked up all the green areas in these desert states that could possibly be lived in. The rest of its just bare rock.
